Nieuport 17p "Trottinette" - scratchbuilt 1/72

In early 1917 Gustave Delage, chief designer for Nieuport, investigated the possibility of a parasol fighter. Using a Ni-17 that was surplus to requirements, a parasol monoplane in the style of the Morane Saulnier L was produced, the Nieuport 17p. The wing was mounted higher than standard, mainly for increased visibility. While being pleasant to fly, it lacked the performance of its sesquiplane progenitor. It also developed concerning wingtip flutter in a fast dive, on account of it lacking the stiffness provided by the vee struts it would normally have. The project was mothballed and the prototype relegated to storage, where it was soon forgotten.

In the early 1920s, inspired by the sight of Harry Hawker gadding about in a bright red Sopwith Scooter parasol, Delage dug out the old 17p, gave it a pretty paintjob and used it as a personal runabout.



















After finishing a Nieuport 17 I was left with a spare upper wing and cowling. While Eduard were kind enough to provide these, they didn't think to provide the fuselage and other bits with them. So, as needs must, I scrachbuilt the missing bits from card, based on measurements off the now-finished Ni-17.

Engine came from Roden spares (no shortage of those around here!). The prop did too but I had to cut and sand it down significantly to the correct length and profile. Wheels were resin re-pops from an SE5, which I had taken a mould from.

Rigging is my usual nylon invisible thread.

I don't know that I'd use quite that language for it, but it isn't the worst model I've ever made.
