After  seeing  how successful  the  Northrop F-5 had become  around  the world, the the bigwigs at Folland  wanted some of that pie also. The Gnat  was already  built  as both 2 seat  training aircraft and single seat  combat  aircraft, but it lacked several  key features  needed to make  it a more viable option.  After  6 months of planning testing and  rebuilding a single seat airframe, a proof of  concept  aircraft  was rolled out to the world. The aircraft  had been fitted with an A.I. radar, a more  powerful  after burning  engine  giving  mach 1.5 capability, wingtip sidewinder rails, and 4 under wing  pylons  all plumbed to carry fuel tanks  air to air missiles  or air to ground  ordnance.  The aircraft  retained  the 2 30 mm cannons internally  mounted  in the fuselage also. The aircraft was  very potent  and nimble, and in a mock  dog fight against  a phantom  fgr1 and a hunter  it proved a  difficult  aircraft to  shoot down. Several  countries were very interested in the  "new" Gnat, including the  RAF, which  were considering  sending  several  to the Falklands  islands, and to air bases in Germany. Both  India and several  African  nations  also took  keen interest in the aircraft  and put in orders.
The kit is the special hobby  gnat F1 in1/72  scale, nice  little kit to build too with lots of detail.

Yup, shows how far SH have come. Their He 162 is of similar quality
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Very nice mode Chris, and a good backstory idea too.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Nice one, Reminds me that I want to build my F11F in RAF colors some day as a grown-up Gnat.

Very nice!  So much whiffing potential with the Gnat.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Thankyou everyone
I am very tempted to  get another  one of these single seater gnats, unless I can convincingly  convert  one of my airfix  2 seaters. A fleet air arm  version  could be on the cards.

J85s from a Pioneer F-5 kit, so a little bit small for anything more realistic.  They fitted the Gnat without too much work being needed.

Brilliant, I  will have to  have look for a che6 f-5 kit to plunder as I  would  like to do one of my 2 seater gnats with twin engines.
Cheers
