BAC Lightning FGR 2.

Due to political and humanitarian issues  a batch of 10 specially  rebuilt  T.55 lightnings ended up in RAF service in the middle east.  These aircraft were  part of an ever growing  presence in  northern Africa, due to allegedly  Soviet backed militia forces  trying to take over areas with Uranium  mines. The British  government have ownership of  several of  these mines and their townships, and were.not happy  with the situation, that had been steadily  getting  worse from late 1967, until  the late 70's.  The British government at the time couldn't afford to  send  front line aircraft  out to defend the  mining  concerns, so to keep it under the carpet, sent out reserve and stored /retired  aircraft.  This ranged from 1950' vintage  naval aircraft to the embargoed  lightnings  and many others too. The lightnings were armed with air to ground  ordnance  offered  by BAC to export customers, these were put into production  and sent as back up for the converted T.55's. 4 recently mothballed  Victor tankers  were reinstated  and also sent  to North Africa as support.  The militia  had only ground  forces and no aircraft  were deployed  by them thus far, but the majority of the RAF  aircraft  were either armed with sidewinders or  modified to  carry them. Kit is the old matchbox one  , I  have a few bits of snagging to do before it can gather dust  on the shelf.
