You could always add a tubular frame between the roof and chassis to support heavier weapons.

Hence my original question which was spurred on by the AFV Club HMMWV kit which includes the framework in what would otherwise be a standardd Academy HMMWV kit.



While performing a search for more information on the Hughes (MDD) LHX/SCAT helicopter conceptual artwork I noticed that one of the hits was a link to the paper card models offered by Fiddlers Green for the Flying Jeep which got me sidetracked to the idea of a flying HMMWV with that same kind of set up on mounted on the rear of the vehicle.  See attached image for my concept with the flying jeep for comparison.  Maybe another WHIF could be had by kit bashing a HMMWV with a glider model such as the WACO to come up with a winged HMMWV that could glide to the objective.  Retaining the gunner position in flight mode to provide defense and suppressive fires as they glide in.  Crazy, yes, but why not?

Even crazier would be to find one of those small music chips that you encounter in greeting cards that plays Wagner "Ride of the Valkyries" and insert that into the model and put it on a display stand to show it in flight

3D Warehouse comes through again.  I found a 3D model of the M16 MGC and managed to tear it apart this morning and add the pertinent parts to another 3D model of an HMMWV cargo truck.  The gun mount just barely fits between the wheel wells in the cargo bed.  The HMMWV model was a bit out of whack as it was so artistic license prevailed and I added in most of the boxes and stuff that had been attached to the half-track.  without the rear passenger seats in the way you can get a rather substantial amount of ammunition to fit instead.  I doubt seriously if a real HMMWV would be able to travel anywhere but on a hard surface road with all of that weight in the back but it sure looks wicked and modeling the idea in 3D certainly helps you to figure out where the stuff will fit before you ever open up the glue to assemble the project.

How heavy is the quad .50 cal. compared to an Avenger turret?

Didn't the US Army try rigging an extra .50 cal. in place of a Stinger pod on the Avenger for urban warfare in Iraq?

Me2!  Especially after getting an opportunity to sit in one at Fort Lewis back in the day when the 9th Infantry Division was still there.  We had an open house (Dog and PonyShow) for the ROTC cadets that were there for their annual training and 9th ID still had gun trucks assigned to the division air defense battalion to augment the existing Redeye/Stinger/Chaparral/Vulcan assets.  So the local depot modified a number of M35 2.5t trucks to mount the quad fifty in the back.  These were rather austere in comparison to the rigs that were cobbled together in Vietnam for convoy escort since the mission was not the same, these units were envisioned to be in place to protect division assets such as the logistics trains and rear areas so that the other assigned elements could move forward and support the maneuver units.  The division also had M151 MUTT vehicles armed with M134 7.62mm Gatling guns, these were assigned to the Redeye/Stinger teams to provide additional firepower when a missile was not worth the expenditure.  So both of these concepts could be carried forward to the HMMWV.  

I may have to take some time and try to modify one of the 3D models of the HMMWV to turn it into the 6 x 6 vehicle concept posted earlier as a cut and paste job.  It may be the best way to figure out where to cut plastic on the sacrificial HMMWV kit without ruining it.

Due to the lack of airborne threat in Iraq, and the pressing need for ground assets for combat roles such as convoy protection, the Avenger has been pressed into this role. The FLIR/laser rangefinder combined with the .50 cal machine gun has proven very effective, but is limited by no-fire zones, particularly to the front of the vehicle. A program was instituted to remove one of the missile pods and move the machine gun to that position to enable a 360° field of fire. This upgrade also increased the ammunition capacity to 650 rounds.

It goes on to add:

A possible future variant allows for a 600 round ammunition can, only one Stinger missile pod (4 missiles), and 2 FGM-148 Javelin missiles. This variant is largely hoped for by the soldiers, but due to the re-organisation of the U.S. Army air-defense structure into combined air and missile defense, it is somewhat unlikely this variant will make it into large scale production.

The source article mentions this vehicle in the context of combat in Afghanistan, but I suppose it would work in either place.

I have a chopped down hummer somewhere. At my parent's I think. I'll look for it over christmas and post a pic or two. I haven' attached the doors yet though, as I have to combine front and rear doors to do it properly. It's one of those half-finished things that hide around for years before you remember them.
