Oh we can do alot better thats for sure
I had a look at my plane and i have no idea what engine they would have used..nothing  German would fit..the Junkers Jumo 004B1 to too narrow and to long..the Japanese might have built a larger verison ..maybe shortened and larger in diameter ...but hell its guess city right now as this verison is total make believe so lets wiffy the nuts of this thing   ;D
Ohhh im having nasty thoughts what id do to this

I am actually wondering right now if I could replace the whole engine section with a side-by-side pair of Jumo 004s from a Me 262 with different intakes...? I must have some in the spares bin?

However, BMW 003s or derivatives from it would be more plausible, because this German engine actually made it to Japan and became the base for the first indigenous jet engine, the Ne-20, which powered the Kikka jet fighter.

Or maybe the J7W2 was powered by a Japanese copy of the BMW 018 - generally similar to the 003, but bigger and with more thrust (34.3 kN / 7,700 lbf were expected - a good level for an early jet fighter!). One engine could already have been enough,

I could help whiffing this one more (into a double-Shinden/zwilling) if I had a photo from above or from front... Maybe next pictures will make it possible? <_<
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

Thats very ture Thomas..the engine was delivered via submarine ..if i remember right there was more than one sub ..i think 3 or 4 but the others got sunk..either way the Japanese did have that engine.
Looking at the Ne20 ,that engine pod has the same kind of diameter and length as what would be needed to fit inside the J7W2 and the 003 sounds like the perfect thing to really make this bird move.
Ok im not coping you Thomas but dude i was thinking about the same damn thing..two engines..side be side ..i was thinking of a design for the intakes and the mods needed to widen the fusealge  and lengthening at the same time .
Ok now ive definitely got to find another one  ;D and a very cheap ME262 or just a couple of burner tubes.

Looks good and I like the finish

Wouldn't want to use it as a night fighter!
Whatever.

Cheers Comrade matey  ;D and now with your night fighter comment has me thinking again

I can see just enough room for a ventral cannon pack between the landing gear wells.
Whatever.

You could also go for the Frog Ar 234 (also available in a Revell boxing), it comes with to different (optional) engine nacelles - one option are twin pods!  ;)

Looking into the J7W's history, the proposed powerplant had only 900 kp thrust - that's half of what the Me 262's Jumos provided, and even though the Shinden was lighter this would be a rather asthmatic powerplant for the aircraft. Two 262 engines would be fine, though, and yield a comparable thrust/weight ratio.  I really like the BMW 018 idea, though, because it would not have been much longer than the BMW 003 but much wider (Length 419 cm/165 in vs. 360 cm/143 in; diameter: 125 cm/49.3 in vs. 69 cm (27.2 in). This could match the Hasegawa kit's jet efflux mod part well! But a twin BMW 003 solution would be much more spectacular and plausible, at least with a short-term perspective!

I have the  Hasegawa 1/72 kit with the jet parts in the stash so I am aware of it's flaws - hence my comments regarding bigger intakes and shorter legs.
Looking at the pictures i think wing root intakes might be the go.

As far as a big gun goes, there is room for a gatling ammo drum in that nose...

The Wooksta!

I'd go for the side by side Jumo 004C, with a completely new rear fuselage aft of the canopy and wing root intakes.

While I have resin copies of the optional Hasegawa parts for the jet conversion, I feel inclined not to use them at all if I ever tackle my interpretation of the J7W2.

It was such a lazy "conversion" by Hasegawa that I just wasn't interested in building it.

Phill - Maybe two BMW 003 or Jumo 004s in the wing roots (like the three seater Me 262):

Or two intakes and a blended rear end for the exhausts? I think the Jumo 004 exhaust cones would be easier to scratch build. Or you could go with two HeS011 engines, but they're probably too long for the Shinden.

Wardukw

Thomas theres plenty of engines to choose..ok like 3 and all are German at the  base of it ..im wondering if the Japanese would have just banged in one of the German choices or modded one with their own designs..bases 003..004 with a Japanese twist..its hard to say really as like Fred said ..Hasegawa put on effort into their conversion.
Lee on the other hand is thinking along the same lines as me ..enteirly new install..twin intakes either wing root or fusealge intakes..no idea which would be easier to build but both would look cool .
Frank mate ive never seen a 3 seat 262 and the engines mounted in the wing roots is also a bloody nice idea and in all honesty would be the easiest converison to build and i think would also look pretty damn cool too. ;D
Im lovin the ideas from you guys..i am pretty sure the end result will be one version of the Shinden no one has ever thought up before

Almost sounds like a mini-GB, "The better jet-powered J7W"...  ;)
