I wonder if the old donut shaped space station idea is still valid? There would have to be a counter rotating "axle" in the middle to hold the solar cells in place directed towards the sun.

Not if the solar array is on the top/bottom and the axis directed towards the Sun.

Maybe solar panels all the way around the perimeter so there are always some pointed at the sun as it rotates to generate artificial gravity.
