Downunder, the civie Rovers usually had a Holden motor substituted under their hood.  The better well off owners used V-8s, the less well off used to satisfy themselves with a straight 6.  My ex-brother-in-law used to do field work at Lake Eyre in the middle of Australia.  His Landrover had six fuel pumps arranged in series to supply the engine with fuel.  When one shutdown, they started the next one.  It was that hot out there that they were guarantee'd to finish on the last one after a days work - a combination of heat and dust.  I have drive Rovers several hundred kilometres at some speed in Convoy.  Never really had a problem with handling.
