Quote from: PR19_Kit on November 30, 2023, 05:12:22 AMI think you were a few hours early there Chris, but it should be Dec 1st in NZ by now.  ;D

Well the Line Islands are 14 hours ahead of the UK and I have to consider our member there.  ;)

Island Nations like Kiribati, Tuvalu & Samoa have a foot in both camps (being either side of the international date line) but they all count their dates from this side of the line.

Then there's Wallis & Fortuna (a tiny French dependency), Nauru & Fiji.

After those 6 you get to New Zealand.

Every new yes eve thousands of people go to the mount to see in the new yr...it called Mount Maunganui..it's s big hit with ppl..still can't see why really .
But for the actual place for the sun rise it's The East Cape
North of Gisborne, New Zealand, around the coast to Opotiki and inland to Te Urewera National Park, The East Cape has the honour of witnessing the world's first sunrise each and every day.

I looked up the International Date Line and there are some VERY strange anommolies along its length! The Line Islands are actually EAST of the 180 line by quite a long way, they're only just west of Hawaii, yet differ in time zone by over a day!

My brain hurts.....  :-\
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

How about that little island that's still considered Alaska at the end of the Aleutian chain. It would be the last place to see the new year!

It looks like I neglected to add an entry! So here we go!

USMC Seahog, 214 Blacksheep squadron. The Marines never figured out just what to designate it as, seeing how it was made from spare parts from the boneyard.

Thanks 1-Week GB Mods for the 9-year extension to get this one (started for the 2015 1-Week Group Build) finally done!

LTV Corsair GR.1 XX726, 31 Sqn, RAF Bruggen 1992

The Corsair was selected as the RAF's principle ground-attack aircraft following the collapse of the Anglo-French AFVG project and subsequent cancellation of the SEPECAT Jaguar (also Anglo-French).  Powered by an unreheated Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan, the Corsair GR.1 was assembled by BAC at its Warton facility.  Based upon Ling-Temco-Vought's A-7E Corsair, in addition to the Spey (incidentally, the basis of the Allison TF41-A-2 engine that powered US-built variants) the Corsair GR.1 was unique to the RAF in that it was constructed ffrom an item of UK and US-builts components and wholly British avionics.

The RAF accepted delivery of the first of 165 single seat Corsair GR.1s with No 54 (F) Squadron in 1974.

Beginning in 1975 with 6 Squadron, followed by 54 Squadron based at RAF Coltishall, and a 'Shadow squadron', 226 OCU based at RAF Lossiemouth, Corsair squadrons were declared operational to SACEUR with the WE.177 nuclear bomb. 14 Squadron and 17 Squadron based at RAF Bruggen followed by 1977.  20 Squadron and 31 Squadron also based at RAF Bruggen brought the RAF Corsair force to its peak strength of six squadrons plus the OCU, each of twelve aircraft equipped with eight WE.177s. Two further squadrons, 2 Squadron and 41 Squadron based at RAF Laarbruch and RAF Coltishall respectively, were primarily tasked with tactical reconnaissance. From 1975 the OCU's wartime role was as an operational squadron in the front line assigned to SACEUR with 12 Corsairs, eight WE.177 nuclear bombs, and a variety of conventional weapons.

The RAF Corsair force was reduced in late 1984, when 14 Squadron, 17 Squadron and 20 Squadron exchanged their aircraft for Tornado GR1s, although their assignment to SACEUR and their wartime role remained unchanged. The two other RAF Germany units, 2 Squadron and 31 Squadron followed suit in 1985 and 1992 respectively, which left the operational Corsair force concentrated in 6, 41 and 54 Squadrons at RAF Coltishall.

XX726 is depicted as it appeared on 11 February 1992 (just two months before the unit began converting to Tornados) prior to undertaking a training sortie to Wainfleet Range to drop Paveway LGBs, which had been added to the Corsair's weapons suite immediately after the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

I dispensed with the kit's drop tanks, replacing these with adapted Airfix Tornado GR.1 Skyshadow pods.

Markings are a mix of Modeldecal sheet 77 31 Sqn Tornado GR.1 unit markings, Modeldecal 50 31 Sqn Jaguar stencils, Airfix Tornado GR.4 markings for the Sidewinders and bombs and a variety of generic Modeldecal and spares box items for the remaining markings.  The serial number came from the Airfix Jaguar GR.1 kit.
