Purchased to replace the Focke-Wulf Fw 44 Stieglitz (Goldfinch) in the late 1950s, the DHC-1 Marmot as it was called in Switzerland, was used as a basic trainer for many years, being retired in the late 1980s.

The Marmot differed from most DHC-1 Chipmunks by having an Avco Lycoming O-360-A4A engine fitted as well as a bubble canopy which the Swiss had deemed as essential to help both student and instructor with their all-around vision, there are lots of mountains that could be flown into in Switzerland after all. The increased power of the 180hp Lycoming was also a welcome improvement.

The use of an Avco Lycoming engine prompted Richard B. Stratton to perform a similar conversion for use by the British Gliding Association.

I gave the Marmot a spray of Gloss appliance white after masking off the interior parts that I had previously painted black. I'm never very happy with spraying rattle cans but at the moment it's that or a hairy stick and the can is quicker, well maybe. It was a little later that I was checking the parts for the build when I found that some parts I was going to use couldn't be found  :banghead:

Not sure if it's because I have separated them or because they were not there to begin with. This getting old thing is not doing my memory any good  :banghead:

Anyway, Scalemates and look up the DHC-1 in 1/72, a nice company in Belgium has the version I want in stock so they received an order for one from me. It slows the build down a bit because the engine is different, almost all of the rest of the airframe is the same so I can keep going. I could be sticking bits together in the near future.

If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .
