Sounds like you'll have to pull that putty off and try something else. If it's taking this long to set up I wouldn't trust it to hold paint.

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

It's relatively new Presto putty, that only Dizzy and I use. But I suspect I layered it on a bit too thick, so I'll leave it a few days and see how things go.

Yep..that'll do it ...also if it's cold too..that slows it right down .

Having left it for an extra day or so, the putty sculpture has hardened up and I sanded them down quite nicely last night.  ;D

I'll give them a quick primer spray to see how they look and maybe some more PSR, but it looks like the scheme has worked.

The puttied engine cowlings are looking pretty good now, just hemispherical bumps on the front of the original cowlings, just a tad more PSR will have them sorted.

I spent much of the day drawing up decals for the HP42, the ones in the kit, having been printed in 1965, could be said to be a bit knackered. 'Knackered' is a technical term meaning stuffed, dead, beyond the pale, totally useless or another other suitable expletive you can think of!

It seems the font used by Imperial Airways back in the 30s no longer exists, or not as a .ttf file anyway, so I laboriously drew up each letter 4x times full size and then  shrunk them to the size of the ones on the old decal sheet, and it took a LONG time. Having done that I checked how they'd fit on a 1/144 scale drawing of the HP42 and they were rubbish.  :banghead:

Much checking, measuring, scaling and re-scaling took place and it seems Airfix got the size of the letters all wrong way back when, they're miles too small, so I'll have to rescale the whole thing, darn it!

Ho hum, if it was easy everyone would be doing it, eh?

Nobody back then used a "font"
for registration numbers etc.. The
lettering was done per a style guide
that showed the shapes and defined
the proportions of the elements as fractions of the height and width, i.e: the width of a vertical stroke as 1/3H; the space between one letter and the next as 1/4W etc.

Tell me about it, I spent hours doing just such calculations while poring over umpteen pics of HP42s!
