TSR.2 finish question

Just out of curiosity, what did the TSR.2 look like without any paint on her? I've never seen a picture of her naked

Seriously, if I wanted to do my Airfix kit up in a bare metal finish for some perverse reason, could I do it and still be realistic? Was she a full metal bird?

due to the nature of the X2020 Aluminium/Lithium alloy material she was mainly skinned with, it wouldv been highly unlikely to have seen a TSR.2 in bare metal finish (other than, for eg. being chemical stripped for an overall repaint a'la XR222 at Duxford!) aluminiumised paint would be ok i guess tho!

so's not to repeat whats previously been posted upon the forum, for a fuller discourse on the nature of such alloys have a looksee through previous discussions on the TSR.2 threads

cheers, joe

I know they are the originals and such, but I really wish they would do something about those delaminated front and side screens on XR222.

It's a professional thing, comes from 25 years in the air museum business and almost as long as an airframe fitter. It doesn't matter how you tart up the paintjob they will be allways staring you in the face if they do not replace them.

It's an interesting look with the shades of grey that the skin has. Definitely looks like some of the anodised skins on the Jaguar when they are stripped of paint.

Cheers

May be she washed down with Phosphoric Acid because that tends to turn aluminium grey

Well, I don't care what anyone says, my Saudi TSR2 will be painted silver to protect it from the sun :P

Thanks for the feedback folks, guess I'll not do mine in BMF.

You might think this idea stinks but what about BMF but with white upper surfaces, a bit like a 60's airliner, with RSAF markings?

nev

I don't think it stinks, but I've been set on a silver Saudi TSR2 for months, years even!  They had silver Lightnings, and by jove, they're going to have silver Eagles too!

On a serious note, the RAF Lightnings based in the heat of Cyprus has part of their spine painted white - this was where the AVPIN starter fuel went, and it needed protecting from the heat.

Hey, there's a thought!  The Silver Eagles would be a great name for the RSAF TSR 2 display team!
