Guys

Gary F & Nev raised a good point: Paraphrased it's this:

'I'd like to build a (?) but I need to find the decals.

OK, here's my idea - use this thread to ask for and offer decal assistance.... F'rinstance if Gary F needs a particular unit insignia to build his RAF A-6 Intruder, he can ask here, someone can respond and you go to the PM's to sort the details out.

OK, over to you

Ian,

Nice idea.  I've been gathering up RAF/RN decals for the last year or so to do some other Whif projects so I've got stuff to work with but I'm somewhat ignorant as to what I've got and what I'm looking at for the most part.  My latest quandry is sorting out the 'tail numbers'  as in XLnnn or XSnnn  with squadrons .. ie, does a certain letter code belong to squadrons or perhaps ac types??  Or if it really makes a difference and is it worth robbing specific tail numbers from various sheets just to match the working profile?

Gary,

The XSxxx and XLxxx are juse sequential serial numbers, and do not relate to a specific UK user or squadron.  The way the system works, XS--- is a later serial than XL--- because "S" is further down the alphabet than "L".  At the moment they are up to ZZ--- numbers, though some have been skipped.

If you want to be realistic find a serial for an aircraft that entered service around the same time as your INtruder and you'll be fine.  If the Intruder was used instead of an existing type, such as the Buccaneer in your backstory, then a Bucc serial would probably be the most plausible.

The system works for all UK services, RAF, RN, and Army.

Hope this helps clarify it a little.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

There is a website somewhere that lists all the UK serials, ever.  Very useful for finding a suitable serial.  I'm at work right now so can't get to my Favourites, but if you PM Wooksta or Thorvic they should be able to give you the link.

Some interesting stuff there...10 serials blocked for C-17s....14 for Reapers (though one is already gone).

What's the Wildcat?  Another target type like the Voodoo and Mirach?
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

AD ... thanks for the comments and help across several threads lately.  The serial number explanation helps a lot.

Nev and Mav, thanks for the link info ... will come in handy

regards,
Gary

ps ... anyone know a source decal sheet that has the A&AEE title words fully spelled out, in 72nd?  The Xtradecal sheet for the TSR2 has just the A&AEE like that, but looking for the full  Aircraft & Armament Experimental Establishment title.

Model Alliance Canberra sheets?

I've got the Xtradecal TSR2 sheet - and I have (advanced) plans for the A&AEE titles - it's the only sheet I can recall, but many eons back, I recall (maybe Microscale) doing a Hawk sheet with ETPS decals - not what you asked for I know, but it's quite close

Thanks for the tips, guys.  I've got the TSR2 sheet also and could use the A&AEE titles easily, or even the ETPS titles, but thought I'd try to find the full out title mentioned for starters.
Ian, I think I've seen the Hawk sheet you mentioned at my LHS recently while flipping thru the decal collection ... I'll have to go back and look for that one.

ps ... to anyone else, I don't have plans for the RCAF and NASA portions of the TSR2 decals from the Xtradecal sheet

AND to anyone with the part 1 sheet for the TSR2 and not going to use the USAF  Lakenheath markings, I'd be interested in those
(I'm in the US)

I have numerous decal sheets that I would be willing to part with bits of.

I have already received several different markings from several different Whiffers for some of my ideas.
