Modelling Disasters!

Some time ago, we discussed this and shared some of our spectacular moments of sheer stupidity.

I present to you: "The Morsair Paint Disaster of February 2006"

1. The Root Cause:
- I decided to "save time" by using store-bought spraypaints rather than airbrush custom colors using Acryl.

2. The Compounded Error:
- Because I would be separately masking colors off after they were painted, I was unconcerned about paint compatibility (some of you nod your head, already knowing very well where this will end up).

3. The Seemingly Unconnected Mistake (trust me, there is always at least one):
- I forgot to underpaint the areas to be yellow with white primer.  I forgot how pissy any yellow spraypaint normally is for opacity.

4. Faulty Materials (these kind of scenarios are seldom 100% the fault of the modeller):
- The "Boyd Colors" yellow spraypaint by Testors is, to use an apt British descriptor, absolute poo-poo (with an english accent).  Even four coats later: ya right---forget it.

5. The Cure That Is Worse Than The Disease:
- Having let the not-very-yellow bits dry, I figured if I gave them a light sanding to reduce the gloss and create some "tooth" I should be able to overspray with the white primer I should have used in the first place.  After all, the two paints are both petroleum-based.

6. The Horror (go ahead, imagine Marlon Brando saying it in Apocalypse Now):
The white primer went on very nicely.  Then proceeded to do that really cool dry-lake-bed kind of cracking thing that only happens when you mix completely incompatible paints (or let a lake dry out for 1000's of years).

7. The Cloud's Silver Lining:
I believe I have discovered a brand new (for me) method of paint removal since the incompatible primer made the yellow spraycrapaint VERY easy to remove!

8. The Pictures:

Styrene in my blood and an impressive void in my cranium.

My sympathies to you and your Morsair Mr Howling Mouse. You have my best wishes that you're able to come up with a solution soon. I almost suffered a similar fate with my Icelandic ski-plane over the weekend, but fortunately, for now, thick applications of the paint that was cracking seem to be holding up. I'll try to remember to never again paint Testor's over Tamiya.

That whole paint compatability thing is very "challenging" isn't it?

Well, Baz, on the bright side, at least Mrs. Hitler is still better looking than you, even w/o paint !

And might I add, Treat it to Tremclad, give it Some TLC ! The stuff always works for me, and their aluminium is to die for !

Ouch, that hurts to look at !   Yep, don't mix paint brands, and always always always always prime with white or light grey.

Yikes.  Hope the poor bugger gets better.  Are you going to have to strip it?  The plane's structure is perfect .

Barry, you poor fellow!

Sand the offending paint, reprime and use proper paints.

:o NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT THE MORSAAAAAAAAAAAIR!!!!

Lana and I feel your pain, Baz. I only hope both of you can work together to get past this.

I only hope this hasn't happened because of my constant pushing for progress.  :(

noxioux

I've had that happen before.  My solution, if I'm using spraypaints, is to make sure that each coat of paint gets a chance to completely cure.  But sometimes even that doesn't work.

Just be glad it's the wingtips, and not the whole bloody thing! :dum:

Damian2

You can do it JHM!!! I beleive in you!!!
Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

BlackOps

This wouldn't have happened if you would have used flourescent orange

Man, I am really sorry this happened...I hate sanding more than anything else. On the bright side the Morsair is looking quite nice not including this little mishap.
