hey all! i have been rummaging through this forum for about 6 months now and finally decided to participate.

my name is paul, im 17 and from scotland. i love building models, mainly civil aircraft but i have been doing a lot of military ones lately. i mostly do OOB work because im not brave enough to butcher up a perfectly good kit :P

the only even near what-if is my su-27. and its only a whif paint job. but i thought id post a pic of it, since i have been drooling over all your pics for so long   :P

well anyway im off and let me know what you think??

What-If starts usually starts small, just like what you are doing.  To me that paint job is plausible, which means you achieved one of the objectives of "Whiffery" which is to allow your audience to look at something and say "If you would not have told me that the ________ had never looked like ________ , I could have sworn I saw it like that somewhere".  Good Job B)
You don't have to butcher up a good kit (in the future).  You probably can dive into your spare parts box and create some insanity from there.

Paul, that paintjob is totally excellent and one fantastic introduction! Welcome to the asylum. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

P.S. Never worry about butchering a kit. Even if you completely muck it up, you can still use the parts for something else.

Be careful how far you take it, look what I gots myself into!

Mighty cool flanker you have there! So very eastern-bloc

What kit did you use?

If you ever do decide to do a kitbash, there's always hobbycraft. Plenty of cheap kits that you won't feel bad about butchering up. Revell-monogram is good too, the cheaper subjects anyway.

And shas... did you dare cut up a glow-in the dark snaptite for that airplane?? shame on you! And hey, those wings look familiar... hobbycraft flanker?

Hi Paul from Scotland!

That is a GREAT scheme and paintjob.

Keep 'em coming.  I understand how you might not feel comfortable now about cutting into plastic and that's okay, with great, original paintjobs like yours.

But, sooner or later, you may see an airframe with "regular" sweptback wings and wonder what it would look like with a delta wing swapped from another kit.  Or wonder what a different nose radome would look like, etc.

You test-fit the pieces from a couple of different kits together and find yourself pleasantly surprised that they pretty much fit on their own.  It's just a little temptation at first.

At that point, welcome to the wacky world of kitbashing and scratchbuilding, my little cartoon world:   "I watched a puttied snail....crawling, slithering... along the edge of a styrene straight-razor...and surviving...that's my dream, it's my nightmare..."

Paul, looks like your off to a great start, my first What-if was pretty much just a paintjob but my second turned into something I had never expected.

It's really not as hard as you think. Trust me it's fun and worth a try...at worst you can take it apart and try something else, at best we will all drool all over ourselves and heap praise upon you ;)

Glad you shared your SU-27 with us and hope to see more from you.

God, why is everyone trying to get me to build a Flanker? That just looks SO DAMNED GOOD!

Paul, welcome aboard my young friend! Fantastic introduction and some masterful paintwork! WOW! I foresee great things from you.

RIGHT! Someone get me a Flanker kit, ASAP!

paulman21

thanx for all your kind words guys!!   shasper, that looks nuts!!! is it finished yet?   gooberliberation, it is the airfix kit, collected with my flying hours:D and JHM i do wonder lol, A LOT. i guess one day i will make the move.

im currently on a vc-10 tanker, and the scheme i was going to do was white bottom surfaces, then grey base coat with green camo on top. dont ask why though lol. it looked the bees knees until i put the last coat of white spray on. :(  it reacted with the green camo so i stripped it all off and now im just going plain grey and normal decals to get it off my desk!

Well keep up the good work guys.

PS - I'm 54 and most of my stuff are still re-paints !
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Dork the kit slayer

That is a fine way to introduce yourself.

Welcome aboard the crazy train! Your color choice are right on. Is that canopy tinted? If so, did it come that way are did you do it. B)

(yet)  :P the canopy came clear and i used humbrol clear colour1322 and just brushed it on the inside. i not too fond of this tho cuz it was a lil tacky to put on.

Speaking of tinting canopies, I have used Tamiya's clear "Smoke" and my own concoction of Future/Klear tinted with India ink.  Varying results.

I just bought a rattle can of Testors #2949 "Transparent Black Window Tint" stuff for tinting auto model windows.  Has anyone tried this yet?

Great Su 27 of yours, looking like an acrobatic star (red) for airshows...
In Scotland was already our TSRJoe, no? Are you in contact, enjoying each other's creations?

PS. I prefer your winter Russian colours than JMN's:
