Our friend pometablava sent me this information:

"Major Wright of the Fairey Board of Directors asked the Design  Office to provide some details of a twin-fuselage Firefly vis-à-vis the Twin Mustang. This was in August/Setember 1950 and four versions were looked at.
a) a ship-borne anti-submarine aircraft
b ) a ship-borne fighter-bomber
c) a shore based fighter
d) a long range fighter with six 20 mm cannon
Power plants were to have been two Merlin 35 but utilising the same radio and radar as fitted to the Firefly Mk5. This seemed a bit strange because the Merlin 35s, although developed from the Mk 24, was a training aircraft engine rated at 1250 bhp. The performance was consequently down, 290 knots at 11,500 ft. The Design Office decided to forget the idea."

I don't know if you already knew about this.

I did not, thanks Antonio!
Now who will build this one? There is a Firefly Mk5 1/72 in the SpecialHobby catalogue (see http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=SH72031 ).

Well, it could even have been exported, it seems, as Firefly Mk 5/5:

Soooooooooooooo nice... how do you changed the boxcard? this is an impressive achievement!!
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

My Corel Photopaint software can play with box art, yes, but also with model pictures, to be even closer to the what-if modeler's subject:

(this is another Export success for the Twin-Firefly, in Denmark – no, I'm joking, while Antonio's source was very serious: as project for the Royal Navy, this is History)

Captain Canada

Great stuff, Tophe !

I liked the first one best, possibly becasue of the paint scheme. The yellow trainer type Firefly doesn't do much for me. I do like the look of the 'slab' type tailplane, as well as the one observer cockpit being covered.

I would like to see an AEW type, with the big radar under the center wing section.

Thanks for sharing !

Wonderful, that makes a 6-planes full squadron of Twin-Fireflies! Glory to Denmark!

Comment in E-mail by our shy pometablava, that was the very source of this topic:
"Very nice!, I love this twin Firefly!"
Congratulations, B777LR...

Private E-mail from our freind Lark: "I have an idea that somewhere I read about plans of the British Admirality for a Twin Firely (Fairey) long range patrol aircraft - 1950's"...
Yes, this is the one we were talking of here, in this forgotten old topic, dear...
