Yep, for a group build, one of the ships will be a whatif schnellboot...barge buster. flak 88 and all!

Limited to bow and stern shots only due to the excessive recoil?  Added benefit of the stern shot is that it would provide covering fire as well as a boost in overall top speed of the boat as it departed the area of conflict...

LOL...exactly!  Actually, with the cg being moved, the gun would be able to traverse about 45 degrees from the centerpoint stern without going too crazy...certainly no port or starboard shots!
Wait 'till you see the mines and depth charges...ah, a thing of ugliness!  I'm trying to make this a barge/asw fast boat off the coast of the warm Manila...

Needs a bigger gun!

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Even better yet, mount them in the torpedo tubes, the you could have a distinct advantage of being able to fire off a pair of 88mm HE rounds as you attack your target and cover yourself with the rear 88mm as you break away from the attack.  An interesting concept for a "gunboat" without weighing down the hull with heavy turrets.

Interesting point, JF.  But I don't think the aiming platform from the tubes would be so good.  :)   Perhaps if the tubes were removed entirely, and large guns mounted in place, it would work, but the aluminium necessary to make the holding brackets was in scarce supply in 46 germany...so, I think the 88 stiff mounted to the middeck/stern is the best bet.  Depth charges and two torps only, no resupply aboard...would have made the most sense for a bargebuster.

Leigh: you might as well wish for 18" while you are at it.  (hey, that sounds rather perverse)

Must be a typo, it would be best with 18 inch guns...

cthulhu77

Yeah, I thought of that for a while, but ended up deciding on the charges...for an asw platform, they would be necessary...and the milkcows were around in abundanza !  Herne said he's going to send over some lathed scale charges for molding, so that bit is covered.
Yep, the P.E. site is a nice one, isn't it?  It's been one of my favourites, and I can highly recommend the info there too.

Hells bells, let's just put a twenty inch gun on a raft and let 'er rip! :)
