Soviet Aircraft Carriers

From what i remember, two soviet carriers are currently under development, one by GeoffP based upon the ex German Graf Zeppelin adapted as the first Soviet carrier from the late 50's. The other was the project Orel from the 70's which JoeP is adapting from a Kuznetsov kit, backdated to a CTOL configuration with Steam Cats arrestor wires and a 70's Radar & Weapons fit.

JoeP on the Orel project i noticed that Kombrig are actually doing the Ural whos nuclear powered hull was built to be the first soviet carrier in the 70's. I doubt however you would want to convert that hull into a carrier !!!

A few on the Kombrig kits would actually make very good escorts for both the carriers as they cover both the early cold war and later periods. Just bloomin hard to get hold of unless you want to trade with Russia !!!!

Hi Terry

As far as i know the carriers are both 1/700 scale. I magaine the aircraft for the group build will be 1/72 or 1/48 or bigger if preferred.
The Kombrig range is mainly 1/700, but they do 1900 Russian ships in 1/350.
on the soviet carrier issue, trumopeter are supposed to be doing a 1/350 Kuznetsov, homefully this will be a new build similar to thier Essex/Hornet kits, the new Nimitz for next year and not Panda rescaling the original Italeri kits and adapting that !!!!( The B1, and F35 are scaled up copies as too are some of thier announced aircraft and helo's - C17 should be original though !!!)

"Orel" is just about done. She needs a couple directors for the SA-N-4s, and a final over coat of dull, but this is what she looks like now.

She's about Forrestal size, and based on Western supercarrier design, with only point-defense weapons, relying on her aircraft for long-range attack and outer defense.

Now I'm waiting for Skywave to release their new Soviet plane sets, so I can duplicate your big models on this one.

Hi Joe

Looking very nice, you just need the Aircraft to go with it !!!. I noticed that Skywave has a 2nd metal soviet set out with the Su-17 & Su24 that might do you as the palstic ones are not scheduled to later in the year. However it looks like the Kirov class are almost available (The Trumperter versions won't appear till the end of the year ), and Kombrig will hall the Slava class finished soon as well, so you might just be able to do a Soviet CVBG.
