1/48th Typhoon

Kit: Now we had to wait nevertheless quite a long while for this kit. The first impression leaves quite mixed feelings. First the parts make a good impression. Sunk Grauren and partly very fine details determine the surface, which does not near-hand however to the competition of Tamiya or Hasegawa. Here Revell was already substantially better (was reminded of the straight put Ju 52). The engravings do not work somehow correctly sharply.


The material works strangely and/or the injection moulding. With me the casting frameworks are anyhow squirted out not fully and have at each (!) branch a sinking hole (see detail photos below). In addition the extreme burr, which should not arise with a new form, disturbs me. Since I got one of the first production kits, perhaps had to be co-ordinated machines, form and material still one on the other. On the other hand I have perhaps also a "on Mondays production" received, thus times with the dealer to clean-look.

Still some easy criticism. In the landing gear bay some ejector places which can be removed with difficulty are to be unfortunately found. Further light on the trunk parts some () sinking places are not quite annoying to observe... anything dramatic, but. Now to the very good points. To the kit 2 large spraying frameworks for external loads are attached. These are both present weapons and Sidewinders, AMRAAM and Paveway. In addition, the future equipment with IRIS t, meteor, Taurus and Storm Shadow is attached. In addition still tank and a Recce Pod (which will put I equal times for my Tornado (AG 51 "I" again) to the side). The building guidance shows here also clearly, like RAF and Air Force its airplanes to equip intends (see below). Also the cockpit makes a good impression. The Schleuderitz consists e.g. of 6 parts, whose detailing pleases. Perhaps one could supplement or replace the harness in own contribution.

The pulpit looks completely good, must be released however form conditionally from the separation joint. Perhaps I try it following also times with a coat with Klear (Future, Klir or however things is designated) that is to cause "miracles"... A last side remark for agreement with the model. I have of it much too little notion, when dss I goes there on ice. The development took place at the same time with the 72er model, and over it I did not have still nothing negative belonged... am also my yardstick...

Painting: More crammed, nearly A4 of large Decalbogen is attached to the model. The highest number which I saw is to 273 kan one probably from over 300 Abziebildern to thus proceed. Beautifully that for each country own maintenance references are attached and also the armament gets their portion. So one does not have to use all. Although most imprint in the register are, it gave naturally again a disalignment for the variant, which I would like to build, i.e. the German. White and black of the paw crosses and the numbers are against each other shifted. I must make myself also still smart whether the emblem squadrons "stone-hope" really mirror-image at a side vertical stabilizer one carries (representative "S" would so not be to read).

Result: Despite the criticism mentioned, I believe that Revell succeeded here a good to very good model. Surely still more improvement-worthy will be noticeable to the trailers de Hi-End products, but here one must consider also the price, and this is very favorable with Revell. Unterm line: recommendable.

If Revell of Germany were smart, they would package all of those wonderful modern aircraft weapons, targeting pods, and other equipment as a separate kit.  I would really like to see some up to date ordnance and other things available in something other than over-priced resin and photo-etch.  

Hey RoG!!!!! Take this and run with it.  I would buy at least a dozen weapons sets to match up with the four dozen Hasegawa weapons sets I already have in protective custody!

I took the time to create a polite message to Revell of Germany that I just posted via the link that you so kindly provided. (Revell of Germany Customer Comments Link)

If any of you wish to post something similar with additional comments please feel free to copy and past the following into the remarks box on the Revell of Germany page and add or delete as you see fit.  The more comments that are similar in subject, the better the chances of a response from them in the future as money is the bottom line for business and that is what really matters.  

Would your company consider the possibility of producing a modern aircraft weapons set as an accessory kit for separate purchse? 

There is a real need for additional details such as this for many aircraft models in 1/144th scale, 1/72nd scale, 1/48th scale, 1/32nd scale, 1/35th scale, and 1/24th scale.  The majority of the weapons in question are already available in many of the model kits already produced by Revell of Germany.  If your company were to consider packaging these weapons as an accessory kit intended for separate purchase, I am quite certain that you would see some very successful sales figures for this kind of product. 

Many of my fellow model builders are eager to build certain modern aircraft but most model kits do not normally provide the right type of weapons for the projects we have in mind as we are creating things that are considered to be in the category of "What If"  (Hypothetical) and as such do not always construct the kit according to the instructions provided.  It is the What If or Hypothetical concepts that many of my fellow model builders find more satisfying and it is to this end that I am asking for your cooperation in giving us more options to consider with our model building projects in the future.  If Revell of Germany would at the very least consider the 1/144th, 1/72nd, and 1/48th scale weapons as a start to "test the waters" and determine if there is a real market opportunity.  I am quite certain your company would benefit from this in increased sales and the customers would benefit from having the opportunity to acquire and purchase additional model parts that do not require the additional burden of purchasing the entire model kit to only use the one or two missiles or bombs that are provided in that kit for nother model project. 

You only need to look at the sales of similar weapons sets from the Japanese company Hasegawa which are available in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale as an example.  The American company Accurate Miniatures has also released a weapons set for separate purchase that pertains to World War Two American aircraft ordnance that is also quite popular. 

Personally, I would enjoy the chance to purchase a separate kit of nothing but aircraft weapons in 1/48th scale and 1/72nd scale to support my many projects involving modern American and European aircraft in those particular scales.  I find the normal compliment of free fall bombs to be a bit outdated for the projects I am trying to create.

I sent Revell the following comment:

Would it be possible to produce a modern aircraft weapons set as an accessory kit?
The latest airplane weapons (e.g. Meteor, Taurus, IRIS-T, Brimstone, Storm Shadow/Apache, Armiger, Mica, JDAM, JSOW, SDB) are currently available only as part of the latest airplane kits (like the Revell 1/48 Eurofighter) or are not available at all.

A set containing these weapons would be useful for people wanting to create near-future versions of aircraft like the Rafale and Eurofighter, or for building hypothetical aircraft, mixing e.g. American airframes with European weapons.  

With several of these weapons already available in current Revell kits, creating a separate weapons set could be done with limited investment.
Similar weapons sets from e.g. Hasegawa and Dragon are popular items, but only cover older weapons.

The most obvious scales for these weapons would be 1:48 and 1:72.
But I think a business case can also be made for one or more weapons sets in 1:144. The kits in this scale are often supplied with a limited number of older weapons. E.g. the Revell 1:144 Eurofighter comes only with Sidewinder and Sky Flash/Sparrow.
I have used the Arii 1:144 weapons sets in the past, but these are hard to obtain (I've imported them from Japan) and again offer a limited selection of older American weapons.
A 1:144 weapons set containing the weapons listed above, plus items like the Amraam, Alarm, and American and British laser-guided bombs would be a nice addition to the many high-quality 1:144 kits Revell has recently produced.

Imagine my surprise at opening up my eMail account and discovering an message with the sender's name of Susanne Haller and the subject line containing the words: "Modern Aircraft Weapons."  

Women and bombs, be still my beating heart!! !!

Of course it was not to be.  Instead of finding my perfect mate, it was just a very polite response by Fraulein Haller to the comments I had made through the Revell of Germany web page last week.  

Here is the response from Frau Haller:

thank you very much for your e-mail and your interest in our products.

Your product proposals and comments are collected and then checked for their
marketability. Due to the large number of comments and letters we receive, it is
not possible to include all the products proposed. The selection of new models
is based on a variety of criteria, including of course market analyses. We do
our best to offer a comprehensive range covering various themes.

Nevertheless we thank you very much for your suggestions and we will include
them into our proposal list for the coming years.
