So apparently, Ncuti Gatwa has quit. His second season has already been filmed and will be shown, but some episodes of his first season got the lowest ratings of any Doctor Who episode in the series' entire 68 year run, and ratings for all of his and Jodie Whitacker's have been extremely disappointing. Apparently, the BBC are now considering putting it on hiatus for at least five years.

Like I said, I don't watch TV at all so I only have second-hand opinions to go off, but according to what I'm seeing, the main criticism of Doctor Who in recent years, since the middle of the Capaldi run, has been bad writing, with heavy-handed politically-correct lecturing being particularly unpopular. Can't really be more specific without falling foul of the "no politics" rule.

It's this WOKE agenda thing ...and it's destroyed pretty much everything it touches with TV and movies ...Star Wars is pretty much dead now..the big  movie companies have lost hundreds of millions of dollars..same for the gaming industry..there's huge issues ..huge amounts of complaints from ppl sick of it and their response was "Don't watch/play it then" ...so everybody did 😆
Disney is in the pooper bigtime with every movie in the last ten yrs have been failures...same for most of everybody else...it's slowly going to dissappear mate because the backlash is never ending and the humans responsible are going away and leaving us alone ...and with good riddance 😌
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .

It may or, may not be political correctness or, the whole ludicrous "woke" agenda. I think the main issue is more straightforward, downright bad writing . I cannot comment on the Ncuti Gatwa episodes, not having seen any but, I think Jodie Whitaker got a raw deal. Partly due to bloody awful writing but, mainly (and, this is just a personal view) due to the fact that a lot of tunnel visioned idiots couldn't stand the notion of a female Doctor.

I don't really get why because, the Doctor is not human but, an alien. It has never, to my knowledge ever been determined anywhere that the Doctor must be male! I rather liked her Doctor.

Kathleen Kennedy's just quit Disney, to a near-unaninous round of "thank f*** for that" from the Star Wars fandom. There are signs, tentative so far, that big companies of all sorts are stepping away from the woke agenda. Early days and baby steps, but promising, non-the-less.

Totally agree. I think a female Doctor Who, with the right actress and GOOD SCRIPTS could have been a winner. It could even have legitimately touched on the identity/gender issues that woke's obsessed with. After all, a character who's been 12(?) different males for the last 60+ years and then suddenly wakes up female is going to have more than the usual amount of adjustment to deal with. The key would have been to get the audience thinking about the subject without heavy-handedly ramming "AND THIS IS THE RIGHT ANSWER" down their throats.

Quote from: NARSES2 on February 22, 2025, 05:19:39 AMI was in the first year of senior school when the Daleks first appeared and then in their second appearance they were accompanied by the Robo Men - captured humans who'd been "robotized", basicaly this meant they wore ear-phones and carried a Stirling SMG. We used to play Dr Who in the playground (life was so much simpler for 11/12 year olds back then) and if a Dalek captured you they "robotized" you by holding you up against a wall and kneeing you in the goolies  :o Master on playground duty had no problems with it - how times have changed.  :-\

They were in the film, I don't remember them in the TV series.

Gondor

They were in "Dalek Invasion of Earth" the second serial of Series 2 in 1964.

That explains why, I was three at the time and I have no idea if my mum and dad were watching Dr Who.

Gondor

Ah well I was 12, almost the perfect age for playing Dr Who in the botom playground of Ashburton Sec Mod for Boys  ;D    Life was SO much simpler for 12 year olds back then  :-\

Where's that "Everything I don't like is WOKE!" meme when you need it?

Because the Doctor giving a damn about other people and tackling social issues along the way has long been a part of the series. And remember, this is a kids TV show so messages are not that subtle. You are all adults who (should) know this stuff so of course it rankles - adults don't like being told the obvious.

It was, but I'm not sure the re-vamp is/was intended as such ?

Not sure if I ever recall Doctor Who being described or billed as "a kids TV show". Certainly, even when a stereotypical "kid", I'd never have thought it thus.

I guess it appeared that way to some but, I'd put that down to a combination of the BBCs very negative attitude to ANYTHING Science fiction and, appallingly low production values /ridiculously cheap  and nasty sets/effects

The issue with Woke is not that anyone has a problem with "giving a damn about other people" or "tackling social issues", it's the nature of the solutions proposed, plus the aggressive and intolerent way in which it's proponents deal with any dissent, preferring bullying, cancelling and character assassination to honest debate.

It's either the WOKE way ..there is nothing else..no highway..nothing else and if you don't like it then your a racist or a bigot or a nazi  :o  :o
Can't figure the nazi part out but those ppl are demented anyway and trying to speck..yell or pommel is pointless..even pommling had shown good results 👍 😉

Agreed. This has wandered right up to the edge of the No Politics rule and is currently dangling one foot over to see how far the drop is...
