Bad news for all :(,

as of august 1, revell will be raising the prices of practicly its entire model range  >:(
reason is the everclimbing oil prices, i made a list of some of the changes that are announced
the ammount shown is how much more these kits are gonna cost.

-04044 1/144 C-17A = + €2
-03000 landingcraft with jeep = + €10
-all cars scale 1/35 = + €1
-05015 Uboat Type VIIC = + €10

this news was recieved by E-mail at my LHS, looks like its time for the modellers to go to war.
first the gas and now this  >:(
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Ouch! Revell Germany has been my main sourcee for reasonably priced "new" kits. Fortunately for now, nothing about their W.W. I biplane reissues. I wonder if dealers who buy in bulk may get a discount that would make up for any increase.

The B-17F is going to be released?    I thought that tooling was gone forever.

It could be a new mold. Or the Academy mold?

Somehow, i dont think bulk orders will lower price much. Why would they inform the LHSs then?

Im afraid model kits will only increase in price, and, unlike cars, i dont think there is A) a market for alternative materials, and B) there is a cheaper alternative to styrene...

They say things go in cycles.
I remember the oil crisis back in the seventies and I think this may just be the start.

Funnily enough I`ve been looking at some old Modelworld magazines recently of 1973 vintage and I know their 35 years old but new kits then .......wow Frog Fokker XX1 .26p (GB) Tamiya tanks 1:35 1.50 -2.50 and even then they mention price rises coming so stock up now.

So do we learn from history?

Nope, that was just another hoary modelshop rumor.

Please remember, however, that we have been living in the age of bargains for some time.    In the early 1990's, the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire listed for $34.00 and in the early 1980's the ESCI MiG-27 listed for $17.99.   Using the CPI calculator available online, one can quickly see what those prices are in today's funds ($49.00+ and $40.00+ respectively).   One should note that the online CPI calculator is calculates most things quite low so actual adjusted costs would likely be higher still.  Using the Rule of 72, prices are significantly higher by that standard too.   So, even with the increases, we are living in The Good Old Days.

Hopefully, things quit accelerating upwards soonly on the other hand.  I know I'd like it to be that way too.

Did Academy do one? I thought Revellogram were the only ones.

We also shouldn't forget the bargains to be found in purchasing and trading kits here and on other forums. There's a person over on ARC who frequently posts lists of kits he's selling for only $1 or $2 each.

Hopefully I'll still be able to keep to my "$10 or less" rule.

Oil derived petrochemicals are not the only, nor the original, source of Styrene.

Whether plant sources are industrially viable and at what costs (financial, environmental etc.) is the question.

Hmm, now you are saying it, i dont think Academy did one either. The Academy kit did have a possibilty of being converted. Im sure it wouldnt even be very hard.

Revell B-17F is 1/48th, Academy B-17 series are 1/72nd.

Academy make a B-17F:

Not sure if this is a record breaker or not but it has not even been a month since Revell of Germany released the JPK 90 and now a resin correction set and tracks are now available for this kit.   Information and images available at PMMS under the Perfect Scale Models link or you can visit the Perfect Scale Models web page.
