Revell #05205 1/36th scale Speed Boat

I see they have dug out the old Monogram "Miami Vice" Cigarette Boat kit molds and put some new decals in it and gave it a new name.

I do like the idea that Revell are re-releasing their old Rotodyne kit, but it's an odd scale at 1/78.  I've never seen one, so I don't know how it compares to Airfix's kit, but since they're both of the same vintage (first released 1959!) I can't see there being too much difference.  The Rotodyne is popular & the way they get snapped up every time Airfix re-release theres seems to back this up.  I'd like to think Revell are testing the water for a new tool!!!  Well, I can live in hope! ;D
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That 1/40th Nike Hercules has potential too - think scaleorama......

G'day Gang,

IPMS Deutschland have a test shot of the new Revell F/A-18E.  I'm unsure as to whether this is a repop of the Hasegawa kit or a new tool (although I'm guessing the latter).  It does seem, however, that they're going in the Hasegawa line of 2/3 or stuff all for stores with 3 tanks, 4 AAMs, a FLIR pod and a couple of bombs.

What's German for "Yawn"?  I really like RG's stuff, the new moldings stuff, but yet another Rino? Now their Gannet! Wowsers!

Thanks for the update Mav, it's so awesome that you do this for us. I am just bored of the subject matter.

Looks new tool.  The giveaway is the ECS 'fins' between the (not so) vertical tails.  These are a somewhat recent mod out in the fleet.

ChernayaAkula

It is definitely a new toll. As the text says, it's a very early test shot, hence the lack of detail in the cockpit and wheel wells, which will be added at a later date.

Very nice, but I'd rather have seen a Strike Eagle or Rafale.

That would be "Gähn" from the verb "gähnen" (to yawn). ;)

Sweet! COIN speedboat! Mount a .50" on the foredeck, paint it grey...

The Revell one is definitely the better kit, according to a lot of people, despite it's weird fit the box scale.

Hmm, I'll probably pick one up then. I've got two Airfix Rotodynes in the stash which I've had too many ideas for, a third or even fourth won't hurt!

I have one of those, from waaaaay back when of course. Never finished it as one wing was short-filled and Revell never coughed up with the other part. Maybe I'll make a claim now. :)

It does look smaller than the Airfix kit, but has lots of detail, including a full interior, seats, bulkheads, galley etc. and opening rear doors. It also has a removable fuselage side panel so you can see all this lot, and a removable panel on one side of the rotor pylon allowing you to see the interior structure for some reason. I recall the cockpit is better detailed than the Airfix offering as well. The rotor head is nicely detailed with all the pukka pipework etc.

However it has two drawbacks, one are rivets, ZILLIONS of them all over the darn thing, where the real thing was flush riveted. The second oddity you can see in the pic posted on the IPMS-D site. For some reason it has a centre fin canted over to one side, whereas I've never found a photo of the real thing with that fitted, and why would it be canted anyway?

The real thing was test flown from RAF Benson when I lived there in the '50s, apparently because it was so noisy that the locals near White Waltham, where it was flying, made so much fuss that they moved and flew it from an RAF aerodrome instead. Presumably RAF families didn't count! I'm sure the damn Rotodyne is one reason why I have a bionic right ear now....... :(

Some of it still exists at the Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare. They have a chunk of fuselage, the rotor pylon, one Eland engine and two tip jets. Since I took the piccie below they have also got two rotor blades as well. Awesome (but loud....) machine.

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Modellversium.de has an in-box kit review of the new tool Revell #05901, 1/72nd scale Sunseeker Predator 108 Yacht for your viewing pleasure.

I must say that this is a welcome diversion from the usual fare of things with wings armed with pointy things or wheels and tracks.  Now who has given thought to arming this thing with a couple of machine guns or rocket launchers?  Greg (GTX) posted an image of an armed RAN yacht a while back that was sporting a 20mm cannon size weapon on the foredeck and it looked acceptable.  Granted pleasure yachts are not normally suited to being armed and dangerous, instead relying on speed but with piracy on the rise in certain parts of the world, maybe it would be preferable to have something to fend off boarding parties while you are plying the oceans in luxury and comfort.

Maybe one of those remote weapons stations that are currently all the rave for light armored vehicles could be cleverly mounted and disguised on the upper decks for "emergency use only"?

On large yachts, it's not uncommon to include large hatches or doors to conceal e.g. a small boat, a parking spot for a car (with crane) or what have you.

Example:

One of these on each side, hiding a Minigun mount would really ruin a pirate's day.

I take it you are referring to the Armidale class Patrol Boat (see here for info):

BTW, the weapon you refer to is a 25mm Rafael Typhoon Mk25 Stabilised naval gun.  Though this isn't quite a yacht - it's the new class of Patrol Boat the RAN has.

Mind you, your proposed arming of a luxury yacht with something like this is exactly what I plan to do when I get mine - come on Pirates, I dare you to try and get me!!!!
