I'd like to build the Tom Daniel's Vandal again. I eventually turned it into a shuttle like machine. It is, of course, long gone into ages past. You cannot view this attachment.

Rick Lowe

That Vandal is pretty wild.
Hope it comes with hearing protectors for the driver...  ;)
And can you imagine the problems with engine torque and even just keeping the thing in a straight line?   :o

Ken alot of these customs were exactly as you said...not meant to go at any real speed at all .
Alot of these builds had supercharged engines yet the blowers produced nearly zero amounts of power for the engines ...yep had the look and the whistle from the blower belt but nothing else ...also the build quality was also more towards looks than practicality.
Pure automotive art more than anything else.
One build I remember...nope don't remember who built it..possibly a Ed Roth car ...was basically a motorized horse drawn carriage...driver sat in front of the front wheels fully exposed with a T Bucket style vertical steering column ...power was a supercharged 426 Hemi...that engine should produce 600hp easy but nope 😆
The engine was bone stock with zero compression from the blower and because of the way the car was set up I read trying to drive this at even 25mph was very scary 😅

If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

kerick

Sounds like the Raiders Coach. Six wheels and two engines.

I was trying to find it but no luck so far ...it's only got 4 wheels ..one engine and it could carry ..with the driver a total of 4  :o
The engine sat between the driver and the passengers..oh it was completely uncovered too 😳...ya wouldn't want to fall backwards I can tell ya 😉

Don't know about the custom car world, but in the custom bike scene there was a reaction against unrunnable/unrideable show-only bikes in the early 1980s, at least in the UK and Europe. Lots of custom shows started to have a rule that you had to ride the bike up onto the stage in order to collect a prize, and extra credit was given by judges for bikes that had been ridden to the show as opposed to brought in the back of a van. I know back in the day I encountered quite a few show-winning bikes, including some fairly out-there ones, at motorway service stations while going to or from shows.

One year, whilst heading home from the Kent Custom Bike Show, I was at South Mimms services when Chris Ireland's crew showed up with three of his creations, all being ridden (legally) on the road. One was a classic-shaped chopper, with a very low seat and very high headstock, but with TWO sets of front forks and wheels, one behind the other. The next was a very low trike, powered by a Honda Goldwing (flat four) engine, painted a shocking pink base coat with cartoons of "popular" diseases all over it, and towing a small caravan. The last was another trike ("quike"?) with the same front end and engine, but with TWO back axles, giving five wheels in total, a wooden flatbed, and four truck-style exhausts that went five feet straight up at the back, with flapping caps on the top. The rest of the "trike" was painted yellow, and christened the "Banana Delivery Wagon".

Needless to say, the reactions from the "normie" general public, just trying to get the kids home at the end of the weekend in their brown 1.4 hatchbacks, was something to behold....    There were several near shunts in the car park as people hit the brakes to stop and gawp... ;D

A lot of the telephone-book-sized US custom parts catalogues had hundreds of bolt-on baubles and bits described as "Show-Chromed". The standing joke in the damp and rust-friendly UK was that they were called "show chromed" because the chrome only lasted long enough for one show...

I like the sound of those exhaust stacks!  ;D

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Me too.  There was also a Vanbulance.  Very rare now.

Can't find a picture of the Banana Delivery wagon online, but I did find one pic of the pink one, called "Low LIfe":

The banana wagon had the same style, very low, with a Goldwing engine under a "rocket" tank, but twin back axles, wooden load bed, and the pipes.

Chris Ireland's shop was called Desperate Dan's Customs. Lovely bloke. Mad as a box of frogs, mind you, but a lovely bloke.... ;D

With a front end based on an Austin Allegro, there's a claim to fame.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Found the pics, and bonus feature, here's Doctor Who sitting on it! (I have zero clue why...)
It'd been modded a bit by this point. I don't remember the name "Long Life" from when I saw it, but that may say more about my memory... It definitely had "banana delivery wagon" written on it somewhere.

Hehehehe, and not a silencer in sight!  ;D

Hmmm, looking at that video I think he was the guy who bought my drag racing Imp engine from me. It was planned to go in a sidecar outfit, or something similar, apparently.  ;D

Ah, Ace!

I remember that Quike from The Greatest Show In The Galaxy story from Dr Who. It was used to chase people escaping from the circus of death or something. Sylvester McCoy was my 'first' Doctor.
