Exactly: looks ripe for a cowling swap to Italianize some other airframe and Britishize/Americanize the Macchi.

I've got one of those somewhere - IIRC it's actually not too bad. Definitely worth a punt for £2.50.
Some of my models can be found on my Flickr album >>>HERE<<<

Don't get me wrong. It may be old but from what I recall it looked like the real thing when built and was an easy build. The big plus back then was that it was an Italian aircraft. Not to many of them around at the time

Hannants are doing the Macchi C.200 Saetta for a ridiculously cheap £2.49:

The paint jobs always put me off back when.  Now of course...

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Strangely as a child the most complicated scheme didn't put me off. I'd just grab my brush and give it a go. Now as an adult who doesn't air brush I shy away from them. Oh for the innocence of youth

I don't think that one's actually as complex as it first appears. It seems to be an overall green, with blobs of sand, then blobs of brown, applied in that order. I can't see any examples where the sand has definitely been applied over the brown.

Just that engine and cowling combo is worth it.

It's certainly not one of the more complicated Italian schemes and did they love them or not ? As you say there doesn't appear to be any overlaying of brown on sand which you get with some schemes using these colours. I'll have a look in my Italian colour and markings books. It can still be quite difficult to get it to look right though but is definitely worth a crack

I like the late war Italian 3 colour splinter personally

This is interesting: Hannants are listing Revell's new 1/72nd Concorde as "ex Airfix":

Possibly because it is, and ex-Heller as well.

So have Airfix sold the mould to Revell or are they just lending it?

Good question.

AFAIK Airfix only did one run of the 1/72 scale kit, and Heller only did one before them. It has its faults, which kit doesn't, but I don't think it's as bad as some of the JMNs out there reckon.

No its a Heller Kit, developed by Heller in the Humbrol days, Airfix just boxed it and sold it in the UK. Thats why it never came back to Airfix as it was developed for Heller, who have done a deal with Revell as a result of Revells rather poor showing on its own kit development front in the last 18 mths.
