Chin Turret Harrier?

Been playing around with the idea of a Harrier with a chin gun like an Apache has. While playing around with the sketch I realized the Harrier would be sucking up expended casings unless I do something about it.

Do you think it would be better to make a flexi chute that runs far enough back to clear the intakes or would it be better to just add some sort of recieving tray to store the spent casings?

Here's what I have so far:

Jeff,

Go with caseless ammunition and avoid the problems all together.  By the way, cool profile.

Cool ! Very neat idea. Looks great in that camo as well. I'd like to see a few different nose profiles, tho...like maybe a little saw-tooth or somat hanging down. Just so it doesn't look so pointy.

Are you going to build it ?

I want to build one so I thought I'd try to get the basic idea down before I start cutting anything.

I'm going to track down a two seater for this project now that I have looked at it a bit more. I also still need to pick up a kit with a suitable nose cannon.

I'm always open to ideas!

My idea (I'll do it someday) is to mount the Apaches gun, with cradle, to a modified gunpod, sort of replacing the Equalizer. This will take it behind the intakes, with no worries about ingestion. However, you could also take the spent casings back to the ammo drum, like the A-10 does. The one in my head will be a modded TAV-8B, with a Longbow on top of the tail and PNVS (not TADS tho') in the nose and U.S. Army markings.

Did a quick change to see it as a two seater.

How about putting the turret on the centerline hardpoint and use the existing pods as ammo drums?

Hmmmm, I kinda like the chin gun but if it was a belly turret it could be twin barrelled or even a gatling gun :)

Cuz even though it might work the original pic is just too kick-donkey to give up on!

*chuckle* Works for me, though I admit to being tempted to try the other approach myself with suitable sighting in the nose.  What can I say?  I'm way too much the engineer to not look at it from that perspective; 'sides, other than a trainable turret rather than a pod, that's not that far from the optional gun installation on the F-35B and F-35C.

But the Harrier already has the five-barreled 25mm in those belly pods.

I'm thinking of the turret as a trainable gun rather than one fixed to the airframe.  It gives you a bit of room for an offset attach rather than forcing a direct attack.  I'd use the basic 25mm chain gun from the Apache, but adapt it, if it's not already, to the same rounds as the GAU-12.

I wonder if its possible to fit the forward fuselage and wings of an A-10 on a Harrier...

Evan, the Apaches gun is 30mm. However, the Bushmaster in the Bradley (and LAV-25 I think) is a 25mm gun based on the Apaches chain-gun - and the GAU-12 uses Bushmaster ammo :D
