Republican Spanish AF Marking Question

What does the "CM-xxx" serial number stand for?  Were there any other numbering systems on Rep. Spanish aircraft?  Most Republican Spanish aircraft had them, so I think it might be some sort of sequential system; like USN/USMC BuNos.  If I'm putting them on a MiG-17, how fictitious can I get and still have an "air" of believability?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Just a SWAG, but "C" could stand for "Caza" (Fighter).  Dunno otherwise.

Thanks!  :)   So...  It looks like "CM" for Caza MiG would be entirely reasonable & I can make up the number part!
