Modellversium has posted a rather brief in box kit review of the HobbyBoss PLA Navy Type 039G Song Class SSG (1/200th scale kit #82001) submarine model.

From the images provided of the kit contents it is pretty simple looking in layout and looks to be one step ahead or behind a snap-together kit for ease of construction.  The cut brass propeller is a nice touch.  First thing that came to mine upon seeing that image is "how can I attach that to a shaft and insert in my Dremel?"  It looks quite dangerous from the image and would be even more lethal if spinning at high rpm :^)

Nice, a 39G, now if they can do the 33G I'll be a happy guy... that thing just looks uber, and most of the subs they're doing are conversions over from Trumpeter's sub lines, so I'm waiting, and praying...

I guess you know Trumpy have a Type 33 & 33G in 1/144 scale?  Hobby Boss have a Type 33 in 1/700, if not a 33G yet.

My recently completed HobbyBoss 1/700 Harushio submarine.



A very simple kit.  And very small too.  An ideal kit for anyone looking for a quick build, for example someone trying to get out of a modelling funk.  And great for kids, cheap and goes together nice and easy.  I have to be honest, I didn't enjoy it that much and it has confirmed in my mind that I think I would prefer my ships in a larger scale.  Its a basic kit and it made me put in a basic effort, which is more of a knock on me than on the kit.

I don't know that I Agree fully with your perspective on it, Nev - I built the HB Akula a while back, and while I do agree that it was a quick build, I found myself noticing there might be openings for those inclined to superdetail, like doing an open tube or two.  Similarly, the few Boomers they produce could be done with an open hatch and the tube on display with the round in it or similar.  There isn't exactly a whole lot of surface detail on a submarine anyways, but what there is, HB does a good job of recreating in the scale.

AFAIK only Monogram did a 1:48 A, the D & E were covered both by Esci and Hasegawa (as Moritz says). Word of warning about the HB 'A' - Looking at the Modellversium review, you will see that HB have included a FLIR pod. This was only carried by a few late 'E's (on the s'bord inner station), from around 1988 onward.
