QuotePaging Evan to the nearest courtesy phone...

What's the chance of fitting anything like a GE F110 or PW F100 into a Mirage F.1 without noticably enlarging the rear fuselage?  Reason I ask is because I've got a spare engine off of a 1/48 Revell F-16 ADF kit.  Would either engine acceptable or reasonable from a 'real-life' engineering standpoint?

  Bryan
A F110 or F100 could not be "shoehorned" into a Mirate F-1, the difference in engine diameters are just too great.  It'd take a bit of aft end modifying but you could use either of those engines in re-engining a Miarge F-1E, F-2, or F-3 (use Archibald's 1/72 build as a guide).  If you want to do a re-engined Mirage F-1, the best choices are the F404 Shasper suggested or, if you've got a spare 1/72 F100 nozzle with "turkey feathers", a PW1120 (basically the 1/72 nozzle is just about right for a 1/48 PW1120 nozzle).  Personally, I like the idea of a Miarge F-1J being re-engined with a PW1120. ;)

Hmmm Brian if you need advices for re-engining a F1 (or other) Mirage-maaaaan   (I) is listening your request :)
- The "small", second generation turbofans (RB-199, F-404, PW-1120, EJ-200, M-88) are just the size for the rear of a Mirage F-1.
- Turbojets roughly equivalent to the Atar are mainly the J-79 and Avon.
- The bigger (Spey, F-100, F-101, M53 etc.) turbofans are less adapted they need a BIG enlargement of the rear fuselage.
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

I've got a 1/72 F-16 that can make the sacrifice.  To make a PW1120, how much of the nozzle should I keep (whole thing, 2/3rds, 1/2...)?

Well, let me run a fit check at home tonight, but a first pass look at the numbers says that you can use the whole thing.  If you don't want to sacrifice one, I've some extras from F-15 kits that have both styles and I'll be glad to share.

Well, I don't normally build 1/72 & I'm not really attached to the kit, so it's not a big sacrifice.  It'll probably be the part of the kit that survives.  Let me know how the 'fit check' goes.

Thanks &   Bryan

Speaking or re-engining Mirage F1s, there was a re-engined South African one during the '90s.  In this case though it was re-engined with a Klimov RD33 (ie. the same engine as the MiG-29).  Apparently the performance was quite significantly improved (not so much in terms of speeed, but more with endurance/handling)  You could always have a what-if Mirage F1 R-33 variant in service.

Fit check got done Thursday night (late) as promised, but I ended up not getting in here yesterday.  So, having said that, the 1/72 F100 nozzle with turkey feathers is almost the right size (I redid my numbers and it does end up just a tad undersize - if you're feeling fanatical, you can put an adapter ring of some kind on the front).

I just did a F100 trial-fit earlier myself.  I used the F100 off of an Italeri 1/72 F-16.  The F100 seems a bit small in relation to the fueslage.  I may just push the engine forward & make some sort of "adapter ring" like you suggested.  Although, IIRC, photos of the Klimov RD33 engined Mirage F.1's that the South Africans tried out seemed a bit undersized too.

Just a thought, got a spare 1/48 J79 nozzle you can cut up?  You should be able to use the front portion of that as an adapter ring.
