Well, with the success of my last two idea threads, I figured I might pick you guys' brains to finally set out a game plan for this. I have a Revell 1/48 P-51D bought on impulse with no plan of attack and has gotten absolutely nowhere. The only cool idea I've had so far is Portugal, so I need some help. Any and all is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sentinel Chicken

Re-engine it with a radial engine and "upgun" it with eight 50 cals like the P-47. Then give it a British ground attack camoflauge scheme with D-Day invasion stripes.

Same radial engine, folding wings. "Sea Mustang" in the three-blue camo scheme or the gray/white Atlantic camo scheme.

Thuderbirds 1948! I remember seeing a whiff painting done by an avation artist of some F-51s in Thunderbirds colors based on the premise that the Thunderbirds were formed much earlier similar to the Blue Angels flying Hellcats and Bearcats.

US Navy drone colors. Plenty of variations to choose from.

Shasper

Chop-shop it  w/a Corsair, or better yet, do a Cavalier turbo-prop job!

That lo-vis scheme is pretty cool, Jennings. Not sure if that's the direction I want to go, but cool nonetheless. Also, if it matters to anyone, I just found out how easy it is to swap the ejection seat from Revell's 1/48 F9F Panther into their 1/48 Mustang.....

USSR - Late War Lend Lease, maybe painted in green/brown like this A model:

or in Greys like this La-5:

Other ideas include a captured Japanese version or maybe a float plane version.

By the way, a radial engined version might look like this early version of the CAC Ca-15 (top pic):

Jon,

If you want other P-51 ideas, try here

This is my favourite - the bottom one that is (but I am biased on this one):

The idea was that you would remove the prop and nose engine (probably use the space for nose landing gear, and maybe a radar) use the Mustang's existing belly intake as the intake for your turbojet, place said engine in rear fuselage with exhast in tail (i.e. not under it), maybe put slightly swept wings/tail, and maybe stretch the entire fuselage to give greater fuel capacity (for that thirsty early jet and maybe to help with weight and balance).  The result would be something that would look very much like a 1940's F-16!

What about going the Ta-152 route on it?  Stretch the length and wingspan, stick a Griffon with a 5-blade or contra prop up front, and anything else cool you'd do to a WWII WhIf...

Do a COIN version in Spanish North African markings, or something out of the Gecko mould in African colours?

I found a brief mention to North Korea being supplied with ex-Commie Chinese P-51Ds, so I did a Tamiya 1/48th black one. The reference was "US Intelligence" so I assumed it was bullshit anyway. Looked cool though.

Portugal is nice....SE Asia colours for african service?
