Hi Folks

I don't know if this counts for this forum, but I am toying with the idea of mixing up a Harrier with a Tornado!

Basically, this will involve using the fuselage of a tornado, adding the wings of a harrier and using some of the weaponry of both the tornado and harrier.

I am currently working on a Eurofighter, so it won't be started for a while, but I would love to hear of your comments on the basic idea.

Thanks

Welcome!
Yet another woman! (not to scare you off)

I think there was a TSR 2 competitor that was simliar to what you are going to do, no?

PS: Its the right forum!

Captain Canada

Sweet ! Sounds like an awesome project....Is there going to be any VTOL action ? Or are you just adding the wings of the Harrier ?

And might I suggest how good that particular aeroplane would look in Canadian roundels ?

What's the Eurofighter going to be ? Real ? CDN ?

Hi Captain Canadian

Thanks for the kind words.  The Eurofighter is going to be based on one of the new British squadrons, but it is not going to be a whiff.  It is nearly completed.  So shouldn't be long before the project gets started.

Cheers

Oh, absolutely.

Will the donor kits be the same scale? With wings that small, the Tornado will have an interesting flight envelope.

Pretty interresting idea!!

We already have here a Tonrado/Hornet mix, but never a Tornado/Harrier mix, and I just ask myself why I didn't thought about that before!!

So welcome on board Elsie!!

A bientôt avec des photos j'espère!!

Welcome aboard Elsie!

Lovely looking Typhoon!

As the builder of the Tornado/Hornet hybrid PD7 mentioned, I cant wait to see someone elses take on a straight-wing Tornado.  One thing I thought about doing with mine (here:  Tornado/Hornet ) was changing the vertical tail.  I was a bit concerned that the tail would overwhelm the wings, so I briefly considered changing to twin tails, mounted roughly where the airbrakes are.

I would have faired over the spine and tried my hand a rescribing the outline of a dorsal airbrake, same as the F-18 has.  In the end the F-18 wings were big enough to still look OK with the huge tail, plus I didnt want it to be that much different, so I stuck with the Tornado tail.

What flavor Harrier/Tornado will you be using for your hybrid?  If it's a Harrier II wing, it may not be an issue, but a 1st gen wing may actually be smaller than the tail.  I also assume you will not be using the Harrier's outrigger gear, in which case a Harrier II wing may look cool if the outriger bays were faired over to make bullet fairing fuel tanks.

Either way, I cant wait to see your progress!

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Hey, Dork, forgot to mention the other day, Frau Doktor reckons that you really shouldn't be wearing the 'athletic support' when you got to bed, apparently it can cause chaffing in 'older wearers.....'

Welcome, Elsie, enjoy y'self here and please watch-out for the Canadians, they're a friendly bunch but have the irritating habit of writing "PUT MAPLES ON IT" on every posting !
