Just Curious....

Just wondering what everyone finds the least enjoyable part of modelling. I personally hate installing landing gear & masking canopies. Just curious...

I hate masking canopies too.  Everything else I enjoy, though I enjoy some parts more than others.  Decaling and weathering are probably my favorites.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

I don't mask my canopies so that doesn't bother me.   ^_^

Funnily enough, I have always hated the main undercarriage of 1:72 F-18s. I have about half a dozen yet always dread doing them. Even though they are sturdy, they would sag somewhat. I fixed this by changing glue types. I now use Revell Contacta Professional glue so everything is sweet.

Hmmm, note to self. Need to buy a few more pots to handle current B-52H model.  :o

Don't know why, but I don't like to apply decals. And undercarriages. Not that I have a problem with them but I am one of those guys who like to represent the aircraft in flying config. Also, I don't go to great leghts detailing cockpits, since I only model in 1/72 and the effort usually gets distorted by the small transparent canopies. Anyway, I like to model and never resist the temptation to whif (heavily) a subject, sometimes almost to the point of making it something different to what it was when conceived.

I have to admit I hate detailing cockpits as well & I don't it at all really, i keep them pretty bland, as Rafel said in 1/72 scale you can barely see them anyway.

Excalibur, Drop Bear, I have nothing to add to what you say : I never mask the canopies, and hate detailing cockpits...

Well, I'm also working on 1/72 scale models only so...

I'm more interested in the model itself, including "heavy" whatif and heavy mods...

Concerning the undercarriage, I use Loctite strong glue. With such thing, be sure that the undercarriage will never move, even if an elephant sat on the model one day (the undercarriage would break, but not the root

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.

French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

I'm curious, do people mask the canopy because they are airbrushing their models and don't want to spoil the canopy or are there other reasons for masking it off?

I have always handpainted my models with Humbrol enamels and don't own an airbrushing kit, so maybe that is why I have never bothered to mask off the pop top.
Mind you, I don't model in scales other than 1:72 (apart from my 1:300 carriers), so I have never bothered to seriously detail the canopy frame joins etc. I have noticed on here that some of you hardcore blokes do go to that extent.

Well there's nothing I hate but I do find certain aspects to be a chore. Like puttying and sanding, and the decal process ( I always butcher a decal or four...)

As for the cockpits I love 'em :D but then again I build only in 1:48 so it can pay off...
Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

Thanks Archibald I do use superglue with "zap a gap" to ensure its solid. I guess its just something that doesn't excite me much the whole landing gear itself & the wheel bay doors etc.

I do airbrush & masking the canopy can give a nice effect & save from making a mess by hand painting them. But depending on teh canopy it can be a chore & I model for fun only, (I don't enter comps & I'm not that fussy about 100% accuracy) so it depends on my mood. I sometimes mask with blu tac as well as tape.

Masking Clear parts....... hate....... hate....... vomit

One of the reasons I do in-flight models is 'cuz I HATE the LG!

Clear parts are another hassle, as well as those small ones (pitot tube, AOA tubes, various arials ect). But the most I hate is PSR, even though for whatever twisted reason I end up doing alot of it on a good bit of my projects.

Not finishing them!  That point at a build were you just get jaded with it, usually happens about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way build for me.  Then it gets left & I eventually get around to picking it up again.

Canopy masking is difficult for me, no matter how well I seem to do it, no matter which method I use, I always seem to get lack-luster results.  I don't hate it, as I get better results than free hand, but I always end up mildly miffed.

The old PSR used to be my least favourite part by far, but I started taking the "if I'm going to bother at all, then I'll do a damn good job of it" approach".  Since then, it's strangely become one of my favourite parts.  Very 'therapeutic'!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
