I'd go forward in history and correct the misconceptions about life today.

I'd go back in time and create a much better method of exporting real pizza from Napels and add influence to Wisconsin's dairy farmers marketing end so more of the world could enjoy that fabulous cheese they do so well.  Montana would get the same so all could endulge in Chokecherry Jelly....no the stuff you buy in stores is *not* the same at all.   (compare a Concorde to a Gato and you get the idea).

I would make ownership of a Corvette convertible a mandatory part of US
Citizenship.  Europeans get a similar priviledge with their machines.

Apple computer would be encouraged to allow clones in 1981.

....... If I could time trasport and become an FBI agent that received infos about the murder of president Kennedy in Dallas and stop the plot......

....... If I could time trasport and become a policeman in LA in 1968 and stopped for a control Sirhan Sirhan

....... If I could time trasport and become Umberto II, the King that never was, on September 8th 1943 I would have stayed in Rome, instead that fleeing with his father and would have defended the immortal city untill the allied would have sent paratroops to free it and avoid a national shame...............
... The hottest places in Hell are reserved for the ones who, in times of great moral crisis, stay neutral ..........

This reminds me of an old "Twilight Zone" episode where a modern tank crew on a training mission somehow get transported back in time to the battle of Little Big Horn.

Go to the Mid-1930's USA and:

1) Have the US Army General Staff build bigger pontoon bridges so that they could build bigger takes.

2) Help them get behind the 4-engine bombers.  The B-19 could be flying 2-3 years earlier.  The Dolittle Raid could be a squadron of B-19s flying non-stop from Midway to Tokyo.  'We don't need to put Mitchells on a Navy carrier, Donald Douglas gave us the Bee One Niner . . . '

Ummm somehow me thinks one M-60 would have given Custer a nice edge. Still a fun proposal.

Maybe the Indians need an A-10.....

>Go back to Avro Canada in the Forties and urge swapping the Jetliner's Derwent engines for Orendas. At the same time recommend further real develpoment of the CF-100 (i.e. thin-wing afterburning-engined C-103) instead of the blue-sky CF-105. (I like the Arrow and all, but it was the multiple failures in the Arrow program that wrecked the nascent Canadian aircraft industry)

>Bend Truman's ear in the early Fifties about Von Braun's rocket program, and how it would be "strategically important" for the US to have a space station by 1960 (look it up! This was the original idea!)

>Barring that urge further refinement of the X-15 program so as to get at least as far as the orbit-capable X-15A-3 and A-4 in lieu of the "spam in a can" Mercury program, and use the X-20 Dyna-Soar as a natural follow-on

What? And give William Proxmire more political clout? The Senator from Wisconsin was a one-man wrecking crew for the entire NASA manned space program -- he was the chair of the committee that killed the Apollo program, and always voted in favour of increased milk price supports. He is quoted as saying that if it were up to him, NASA would be shut down as a huge waste of taxpayer money.

Have you seen the http://manconquersspace.com/ website?  They are putting together a 'documentary' about a space program based on the Collier's space articles from the '50s.  A space station by 1960.  A Lunar landing in July '63.

Absolutely! Been waiting with bated breath for it for years now. The "trailer" clip with a drop-shape of the shuttle being towed by a C-135 still takes my breath away.

I also have a Glencoe Ferry Rocket and Lunar Orbiter in the stash, I watch the Dinsey Tomorrowland DVD on a regular basis (now THAT has some magnificent models in it!) and I use the Colliers add-ons in Orbiter more than just about any other spacecraft.

Can you tell I am a fan?

MAD

In the late 1960's an 'Independent' US Congressional indorsed investigation is put into place, after the concerns of the US Military are put forward publicly, that its needs are not being meet by its Request for Proposals (RfP), due to Senator's continuously intervened on behalf of the defence industries, within their States.
This was brought to light after the media got world that the USAF was greatly concerned that its men were going to be sent into harms way, in aircraft that the USAF did not deem the best capable of the designs it had carefully studied in response to its RfP's.
The USAF has in the past two years made Congress aware, that its decisions have been overturned, by Senators within the US Government, who have no military background or experience in design or evaluation of military aircraft, and yet overturn the USAF's chosen winning design on non substantiating grounds.
The newspaper report sights the current USAF's CX-HLS program, which has called for an unprecedented sized, strategic ranged cargo/transport aircraft.
After in-depth studies by the USAF and NASA, the USAF chose the Boeing CX-HLS as the more capable of its requirements, and yet it decision has been over turned in favor of the Lockheed CX-HLS design, by the lobbying of the Senator of the State that Lockheed Aircraft Company is located.
The reporter has also gone on to state that the multi-billion dollar TFX (Tactical Fighter Experimental) Joint USAF/USN aircraft design, that is being designed to fulfill and replace many different aircraft with in the USAF/USN inventory is experiencing similar Senator interference
This is not the first time or case that expert opinion has been overturned by Senators and Government officials.
The Chairmen of Boeing Aerospace, would not be interviewed, but put out a statement, that states –
'Boeing has put millions of dollars and hours of company resources and expertise into its submissions to the USAF & USN Request for Proposals over the last decade, and after enthusiastic feed back and encouragement from the military about our designs and effort, we at Boeing are continuously shocked to find out at the 'eleventh hour', that our bid has lost out'!
'We are simply unable to continue to commit the company's valuable assets and scars dollars to defence RfP's if this continues!'

One year later

The US Military is informed that the 'Independent Investigation', has found that Senators have behaved inappropriately, to the point of braking federal law, to which the FBI has investigated.
The 'Independent Investigation' also scathed the US Military for its wastage of public funds in duplicating and in some cases, outright competing with other services in the Military and creating RfP's that are not always warranted or clear enough.

The 'Independent Investigation' advices Congress that processes should be put in place by legislation and law, that does not allow a single or group of Senators to use their position and power to work for or with any company, at the sack of National Security.
The 'Independent Investigation' also re-evaluates the RfP's and concurs with the USAF (and USN) that the design that they originally deemed winners of the RfP is to be upheld.

US Congress implements the 'Independent Investigation' findings and the Boeing CX-HLS, becomes the Boeing C-5A Galaxy, and the Joint TFX program becomes the Boeing F-111A (long-range fighter-interceptor) and the A-111A (long-range strike-interdiction/recon) in the USAF, while the US Navy chooses a lighter modified carrier-based variant designated the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas F-111B (carrier-based Fleet Air Defence Interceptor) and A-111B (carrier-based strike-interdiction/recon)
