Fire Dragon

OK, Dork has asked me to "spill the beans"....so here goes.

I'm building an Ornithopter gunship from a DC-3/C-47 Dakota.
The basic idea is quite simple in that I'm replacing the outer wing panels by flapping "dragon-like" wings. The tailplanes and rudder will also be replaced by dragon-like wingy things.

The new flappy bits are quite simple....

a frame is built from sprue and fixed at their base onto a plastic rectangle or semi-circle.
the wing shape is created by folding a sheet of paper into two, and the dragon wing is drawn and cut out with the fold as the inner, nearside section. Then the sprue frame is glued (white glue) within the wings, sandwiched tightly. When dry, the wing is light and rigid. This basic dragon wing is then covered with glued crumpled tissue paper to create a veined effect. All additional bits, like the tailplanes (new) receive this treatment.

The tailplanes and rudder will be superglued directly to their attachment points.

The new wing outer sections will be superglued into the open ends of the kits inner wing section. When dry, these will be "faired onto" the airframe with further crumpled tissue paper, to act as flexible "boots" for the ornithopter.

The armament will be guns fixed to fire from the lower fuselage sides, a bit lower than on the AC-47 Spooky, as mid-fuselage mounted guns will foul the flapping wings!!

The aircraft/ornithopter will be from a Spanish speaking nation.
And that's all I'm saying at the moment.
The wing-flappy things are "under construction" and there are no problems forseen.

The "Fire Dragon" will debut publicly at Bolton Model Show, and yes, I'll take some bloody pictures.

And I have plans for more ornithopter thingies too.

Wow!!! Brilliant, really!!! You're really an imaginative guy (I have doubts on the subject after seeing the contemporary crusades thread).

I would have expected that armement of such machine would have been...flamethrower

Hope to see pics of this cool machine soon

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Sounds beauty Radish! If you need any inspiration with the mechanisms you'll probably find some stuff at Ornithopter.ca, the web site of the only real successful one so far. Let me know if you ever need any detail pics, I can just nip in to the museum and get whatever you like.  ;)

Details?

Bloody hell, NOOOOOOOO!!!

Strictly every bit of mechanism is covered by "skin" booting.
I'm almost thinking that parts of this machine will be living!!

By the way, at some time there'll be a true living reptilian ornithopter built, but that'll be a future project.

This should be finished by the end of the week.....well, the building bit anyway. Then a spray in white primer before the fun begins....the painting!

At the moment I'm thinking Peruvian, Paraguyan or at an outside choice, Columbian.
I fancy a Desert scheme so Columbia's "out" really.
Perhaps Columbia could be next with a flapping wing thingy from the '30s?

This reminds me, one of the early AC-47s was named "Puff the magic dragon" and the decals for this AC-47 exist (I forgot who makes them).  Perhaps they can be used on your Fire Dragon (modified of course). B)

Well having completed Mr.Frisky, I shall continue with this. Hope to finish the building totally by Monday, so I can spray on Tuesday. That means I'll get it finished by the following weekend, in time for Bolton a week tomorrow!!

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

The Fire Dragon won't be ready for Bolton (ahhhhh!!) but will be ready (with the Jugular Jaguar) for MK and Huddersfield (HURRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
I've had just so much to do....... :(

I think we're going to have to hev a whip-round so you can invest in a digi-camera Rad!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
