This one was a labour of love, but I am really happy with the little black girl:

A great looker.

I must admit the P-38 is one of my favourites.

I've got plans for a few, including a real RAF P-38 "Droop Snoot" for which I've got some details and decals.....and an Academy 1/48th kit.

I love the F-5E recon jobbies, and I've a couple to do...French and a what if?

Also, whatiffery could look good in the form of an Elf P-38E/F with the smooth cowlings

But.....how about this?
South korea DID enquire about purchasing 70 odd redundant F-38Ls parked in Japan in 1948/9. The US turned them down as the South faced "no threat".
What if??????
Did some artwork years ago for that one

I love old Monogram kits, and some are surprisingly good....in 1/48th, the Fokker D.VII (based on the older Aurora kit), the P-47D Razorback (I've several), the B-25J, the B-26 Marauder, the A-26 Invader, the F-4 Phantom, and who can forget...the F-105 Thunderchief. Lots of others too. :ar:
Once you've visited the land of the Loonies, a return is never far away.....

I'd like to see some of that art...there are a bunch of those P-38s lurking in my stashpile.

Lovely shiny black fork-tailed devil.
I have the old Revell 1/32 P-38L, and someday it'll be convered to an M.

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

I have Academy's Droop Snoot. Did RAF use it? Do you have information?  :o

Nope the RAF never had the droop snoot. Just rad geting more build ideas.

Nice job Greg

Really looks the goods.

I've always thought a P-38J would look good in RAF day camo, or even desert camo (perhaps an F in the desert...).  The Lightning was a vastly under-appreciated airplane I think.  The RAF really screwed the pooch when they ordered them without turbo-supercharging, although we do have them to thank for changing the name from Atlalanta to Lightning :)

Hmm i do recall reading some ware (but it could be wrong) that the reason the RAF ordered its P 38's with out the super charger is that Uncle sam refused an export licence for the them as the were "classified" at the time.

Kits at War Decal sheet K7/15 includes an RAF droop-snoot P-38J used by the CO of Coningsby 1944 - natural metal + PRU blue. Looks smart.

IIRC,  the RAF did order them with the supercharger after testing the aircraft in the US, but when the aircraft arrived they didn't have them because the US wouldn't de-classify them.

Wow that's one of the coolest P-38s I've ever seen! I had no idea there was a nightfighter version until I saw this amazing piece of work!

Good on ya, Greg!

Thats what I've read as well
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

A fantastic build, Greg, and one of the best build-up review articles I've ever read.

Appreciate how you took the extra time and effort in painting it to avoid that "toyish" look you mentioned in your article, too.
