I am very sorry for the confusion. I was using this Italian word in a rather Italian -I think- sense. For instance, Tomaso Albinoni http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomasso_Albinoni was known as "Diletante Veneto" -single t- in an approving way. I DO RESPECT VERY MUCH YOUR SKILLS.

Ah, I think I know what happened here guys, good old British sarcasm.  The word has ended meaning the opposite in English.

i.e., 'He thinks he's a Dilettante', when the originator means 'I don't think he is at all!'  So in a way in English it ends up meaning the same and the opposite at the same!  I'm confused too.....

Translated as: 'No harm done or intended by Carlos'!

It's a slang mixture of German and English. 'Dill' as in 'dill pickle', dill being an aromatic herb, and 'Tante', the German for 'aunt'. So it means that you have an aunt who's rather aromatic, which may be good or bad depending on the aroma. In this case I think he means that your aunt smells like putty.

It is the same in other languages.

The Spanish word "aficionado", that you know in English and is very close to this problematic "diletante", can be used in Spanish in good or bad sense, depending only on the voice.

Do we need an emoticon for sarcasm?
