A P-40 Gb? Who's In?

It's been suggested over on my XP-36C thread that we have a P-40 GB. The idea is simple. Take a P-40, any variant, any scale and use it as the basis for a what-if project. I think the P-40 is a wonderful platform for whiffery and it seems others agree!

So who's interested?

Assuming we get enough folks to get this off the ground, I'm thinking a timeframe running from Fall to Winter later this year would be good, as the GB calendar is rather full through the summer.

There's plenty of kit choice around in 1:72 & 1:48. Apparently the Academy 1:72 kits are little gems. I still love the Arii/Otaki/Airfix 1:48 P-40E and the Monogram 'C' can still be found for very few pennies in UK. I remember building the Hobbycraft B/C agood few years back and thoroughly enjoyed it.

So.... Republican Spain, captured German, Mexican, RAF in full SEAC markings, Post-war Auxilliary Air Force in NMF, Polish.

Just my two penn'arth.

Well I'm currently Wiffing the Hobby Boss P-40B - ideal canvas for a re-paint  :)

I could go for a P-40 GB - fits my period nicely

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

:( I am affraid, I am guilty (originator). I probably finish two P-40s this weekend. Then I will be eager to post them, and I will not be in the GB. What can I do? Please, help me!
Will die without understanding this world.

Hmm, maybe a turbo-prop P-40 (something like the Cavalier Turbo Mustang III).

All hail the God of Frustration!!!

One of the Seattle-IPMS 'elder statesman' modellers did a 1/48th P-40 with the fixed gear from a Hawk 75 a couple of years back...very cool.
Wayne is currently working on a scratch-built 1/16th P-40B.

Wasn't Eddie? doing a Bi-plane racer P-40?

And yes the Arii kit is a gem.

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

I'd most definitely be in! B)  As for ideas, I'm thinking: P-40B with spats in Israeli service circa 1938. Ex-Soviet P-40B in Finnish markings modified by replacing the four .303s in the wing with two Hispano 20mm cannons. Ex-Brazilian P-40N in Israeli markings circa 1948.

I think I can come up with something ;)

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

So far I count seven or possibly more participants! Also you gents have some excellent ideas!

Retro, it would thrill me beyond words to see you on board for this one! Ysi, why build only two? I'm sure you'll come up with something for a third project! If getting another P-40 kit is a problem, let me know. I'm sure I could find one to send you. NARSES it would be a boon to this GB to have you involved! I'm sure other participants would want to avail themselves of your knowledge of this era and bounce some ideas off you. SoD, Steve, Greg & Rally it would be great to have modellers of your skill and talent in on this one! Leigh, Ian Jon, I hope you will consider throwing your hat in the ring as well.

I don't think we could ask for a better starting point for a pool of participants!

And that 1/72 Academy P-40B is indeed a gem. Maybe not Tamigawa perfect, but for the price, an excellent value!

If we get a few more folks interested, I'll PM the Admins and see about adding this to the GB calendar for the fall. It would be cool to start it along with the fall season on Sept. 23rd. Assuming we're able to get this one together, I'll volunteer to moderate unless someone else would rather handle that duty. I will also offer up a prize - a P-40! (what else?)

Brian da Basher

P.S. If we can't get official sanction from the board Admins, are you guys up for doing this in a "non-offical" manner?

Yep, good memory, Leigh!  Eddie's very clever concept is linked below:

http://www.whatifmodelers.com/forum//index...0018&hl=biplane

This biplane is exactly what I'd want to do with a P-40 too but, since it's already been done/conceived, I'll enter a floatplane instead.

Brian, I'm in: official GB or informal.  Permit me to provide a prize, too.  I'll gladly offer the winner a model in their choice of scale, general type (land, sea, air) and subject type (i.e. prop vs. jet, etc.).

;)

Styrene in my blood and an impressive void in my cranium.

I was hoping no one would remember.... ;)    Since y'all mentioned it, I'd join in to finish that bad boy. I may get it out today and see if it will speak to me....

Wow this is awesome!!! Eddie I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. I'm going to request official sanction now that we have reached 10 folks interested in participating.

This is a truly impressive group of talented modellers wanting to participate. I am humbled.

Brian da Basher

P.S. I still think the Grand Prize should be (what else?) a P-40. ;)

P.P.S. It's Offical! Watch for the I Love P-40s GB to be posted soon!

P.P.P.S The timeframe has been moved up a bit. Anything in-progress, incomplete or started as of now is eligible, but you can't post pics until Feb. 14th.
