A requirement to possess a messy bench is covered under the Standard operating procedures for whiffer's Kit ;D
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Size (of the stash) matters.

Have you noticed that we all have pretty large work benches, compared to the size of our models, but the work area itself is MINUTE!  :o

All the surrounding space is taken up with umpteen tins of paint, various glue dispensers, files, saws, knives and every other sort of modelling took.

I was going to say "And I know exactly where each tool is" but that would be a lie. A few years ago I lucked into several old lab cabinets. Made of steel, built like Fort Knox. Now the mess is spread out and covers the work space and the cabinetry. Doesn't help that I collected a bunch of rock specimens lately and they also cover much of the basement floor. Wife has fits about it. I keep threatening to order up a 9 yard dumpster but I know as well as anyone that I won't throw out half the stuff I should.

l knew there'd be a good reason for it, but I don't recall much change in my bench pre-1972 when I built my first Whiff.  ;D

That's because the Whiffers' SOP (1969) is a development of the Happy Modellers' SOP (1962) - which, incidently, bears absolutely no resemblance to the OCD JMN's SOP (1979).

Cleanup has begun....

That's not a cleanup, you've just shifted all the mess over to one side! Gives you more room for a bigger mess on the empty table  :drink:

zenrat

Did you use a shovel?

I was studying the mess on my bench today and it seems to mostly be toothpicks, cotton buds and sanding sticks.  I had to take up whiffing in 2012 when I dropped my rivet counter and lost it in the detritus on the floor under the bench (which is a whole new can of worms).

Mines quite tidy in comparison

Mainly thanks to those Clas Ohlsen storage cabinets/drawers I bought the other month  ;D Away from base at the moment but it's not changed much since the last pic posted
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Supertom

Done! Might have to replace the cutting mat eventually though. Now to build!

How long do you estimate before it returns to it's previous state?   ;D

3 hours, 12 minutes, 47 seconds

Gondor

The problem I have is that there is no space to move the stuff to which is cluttering up my work bench!

I really must get around to making a deep stash to go into the loft thus making room to store more of what I have in my hobby room. It would be nice to see the floor again

That's the 'Modeller's Rubik's Cube Problem' Alastair.

You need at least one empty space to which you can move things just to get started. In my case the Problem encompasses the ENTIRE house!  :o
