The Lightning & F-104 were also in competition with the Mirage. A RAAF lightning could be a fun build.

Might look a bit like this (an earlier creation by Richard):

All hail the God of Frustration!!!

Excalibur

That Lightning does look cool.

I just did some research and discovered the following RAAF/RAN could have beens..

SAAB 105
Canadir Tutor
Fuji T1
BAC Jet Provost
Instead of the Chosen Macchi

CH-53C - Instead of the Chinook

Panther
Hunter
Instead of the Sabre

F-104
F-5
F-4
EE Lightning
Instead of the Mirage

A-5
B-47
Instead of the F-111

Breuget Atlantic
Nimrod (NODS OH YEAH)
Instead of the Orion

F-16 Instead of the F-18

Westland Lynx
Super Puma
Dauphin
Instead of the Blackhawk

The RAAF also operated 2 B-29s which were eventually scrapped. Might also make for a good what if build scenario. As in a full Squadron of them.

Did someone mention RAAF B-1's?

Didnt RAAF loan some for a year or 2 when waiting for the F-111s to be delivered?

Shasper

Yep, 2 sqns of F-4Es.

Don't want to be nitpicking, but its Breguet, not Breuget. Breuget would pronounce breujet  ;)
Atlantic 2 in aussie colours would be cool
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

And the RAAF didn't want to give them back either.  But because the F-4 lacked the range of the F-111, the RAAF would have had to buy KC-135s to refuel them, which then would have made the deal more expensive than the already massively inflated F-111 price.

Most of the aussie F-4Es were later converted to F-4Gs

Yes they did, but it seems that the F-4 was also a possible fighter instead of the Mirage so you could do up F-4's in RAAF fighter Sqn schemes... I actually wrote that first time around...  :D

If it had made it past the prototype stage, I can see the Hawker P.1121 in RAAF markings.

What about the RAAF putting into service Vickers Valiant heavy bombers, as a replacement for its Lincoln bombers, as a response to Indonesia's acquiring Soviet built Tupolev Tu-16 'Badger' bombers?
This would have made much more sense than purchasing English Electric Canberra's, what with the range limitation of the Canberra!

Not to mention the taboo topic of upsetting the Indonesian's

What about the Belfast?
I think the RAAF should have purchased some of these to supplement the C-130's
This would have made for a very versatile transport/cargo aircraft that was able to carry larger and heavier payloads than the C-130.

I suppose you already know that when GB tried to sold TSR-2 to the RAAF, Vulcan were proposed as "interim" bombers.
Sadly, the USAs did the same thing - F-111s and B-47 as interim bombers !!!

Victor in RAAF could be cool, too

who talked about Breguet Atlantic ?
a bomber variant (with stand-off missile to avoid suicide missions) was proposed (Br.1190) for the force de frappe in the late 50's.
