Naval Rotodyne?  Did a few profiles a while back, including some related SAR types & a Bristows rig runner.  In reality I think the Rotodyne Z (the larger proposed production version) would have struggled to have operated from anything smaller than a full size Carrier.  It would been substantially larger than the Rotodyne Y prototype, with a 109ft rotor.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

How about an Antonov An-32KR Shipboard AEW&C?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Do-31.  It would have IMO made an ideal COD and AEW aircraft for small and large carriers.  Perhaps even an ASW variant?

I've been thinking along similar lines with using a S-3 Viking to create an enlarged SV-4 Hummingbird ASW variant (with the original ejectors - reality be damned!).

Speaking of the Do-31, does anybody know of any kits in 1/72 of it?

According to this guy:  http://www.modelersite.com/Jun2009/English/DornierDO31_Eng.htm

You have two choices; Planet Models and Lüdemann.

Not any more 'too big' than DC-9s, F.28s, etc.

Just an opinion, but the Gulfstream II/III/IV & follow ons would be too big for CV Ops, both in height range and in wingspan.

Famvburg,

The a/c you listed have a greater internal fuselage diameter for their size, therefore having great cargo carrying capability, when compared to the GII-V series of aircraft.

Wonder if we might see the Osprey morph into some sort of COD or fleet replenishment bird? At least they could haul more internally & sling-load than the SH/MH-60.

I've got the Lüdemann kit in the stash. It's a bit crude, but should make a nice model.

Both the Ludemann and the Planet kits are rather pricey.  Over 50 Euros each.

I was wondering about scratchbuilding something similar.  Mmm, perhaps a B-29 nose attached to a transport aircraft tail, with Harrier fuselages, rather like the STOVL Canberra that kitnut617 built?  Alternatively, there is the possibility of the Do131:

Which looks rather similar to the Kawasaki C-1:

Oh, and BTW, here's a quick drawing I did of an AEW version of the Do31.  Not terribly imaginative but it gives some ideas I think.

Fuselage diameter & cargo capacity has what to do with their overall dimensions?

While not a naval AEW, this picture shows something rather interesting atop the forward fuselage of an Indian Il-38:

That's the Sea Dragon modification that the Indians undertook a couple years back as an upgrade program until their next-gen Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) came online.  In this case, it's the P-8I version of the Poseidon.

How about an Antonov An-32KR Shipboard AEW&C?

Rumours of PLAN's shipborne AEW usually centre around Ka-30, Z-8, and, for the fixed-wing department, versions of Xian Y-7 family (with disc-shaped antenna like a scaled down KJ-2000).
To the individual soldiers, *everything* is a frontal assault!
