I'm a freat fan of testbed, particularly modified bombers (Canberras, Vautours, Skywarriors..)

Here's some big-nosed Whales. Over 50 years, those A-3s tested a wide range of radar, from AWG-9 to the JSF system!
Nose from F-111B, F-14, JSF and others were grafted to those bombers, and they looked terrific!

Just love this one... F/A-3 Warriorcat!

Another AWG-9 testbed

And, last but not least... a Skywarrior with a JSF nose !!!!

Tons of inspiration here...

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Are there any french counterparts? (to the A-3, not the testbeds)

Imagine:

Il-28 with nose from Su-27, Mig-31, Mig-29, Mig-27, Mig-23, Mig-21, Su-24

Or Canberra with  nose from vulcan?!?!, F-4, tornado EF-2000 etc.

Tornado radar was tested on a Bucc.

The F-22s radar was tested on a 727 IIRC.

Vautour is more or less Skywarrior counterpart (albeit much smaller). Both planes were quite similar in overall form...

Yep, and there is a conversion kit available. Often wanted to do one.

you left out the A3D that Thunderbird Aviation flew, after getting it from, I think, Hughes, that had a reduced size rotodome-style AEW radar mounted on a fuselage extension aft of the tail.

And then there was the B-57 with 17' of BOMARC attached...

Dork the kit slayer

Dint those Canadian chappies have a DC-3 with a Starfighter radar nose? and I think the Skynight with a F4 radar nose was used by the USN to train RIO's for F4s.
Would the Herky with "that" weather research nose count???

Seeing the A-3 equipped with the Hughes AWG-9 & Aim-54 as a test bed, I wonder if there was ever a A-3 'FAD' (Fleet Air Defence) aircraft proposal at the time of the US Navy's 'FAD' RfP, that was originally won by the Douglas 'Missileer' design?
Imagine a 'FA-3' Skydefender' loitering on CAP, brisling with long-range Aim-54 Phoenix and scanning the sky for Tu-16`s and Tu-22M1s

I think this would make a good 'What If' model challenge, and what different configurations modelers would come up with!
