Hi folks,

I have recently used the proposed CVV Carrier concept/design in a few backstories.  I would also like to build a model of one some day.  Does anyone know what would be the best kit to modify or should I go from scratch?  I'd probably looking at doing the biggest scasle possible if modifying an existing kitHere is a drawing and some specs of the proposed CVV.  (some more info can be found here)

Hi Greg

It all depends on what scale you use which dictataes whats available. To be honest i would go 1/700 as its smaller and more generous with accuracy. The key factor being aircraft which are only really available in 1/700 and 1/350 scales and what carriers are available to use.

If you go 1/700 scale then one of the Italeri(Testors) 1/720 USS America, Kitty Hawk or JFK would be ideal as their hull width should scale out to get the right size for  CVV, plus thier port lift and port side sponsons would be more suitable than using a forrestal class kit with its port lift at the front of the angled deck. The hull would need to be shorten by taking someing like a 2cm slice from the centre of the ship (only way to avoid a step as only the middle section is actually parallel).

Create a new island using the kits parts as these should do the trick.

First thing you should do is scale up the drawings and print them off to give you an idea of the size and shape you'll be working with, but at least the 1/700 version should give you an idea of what need to be done should you decide to try a larger version, which are much more expensive, less forgiving on inaccuracy and less well covered in terms of modern US carriers as only the Nukes have been moulded.

Good Luck

i would suggest the french "Charles De Gaulle" with an american main tower like on the USS Henry Ford.  B) , maybe even equip it with some F-35's, EA-18 and why not some F-23C Black Widow II's
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Thorvic,

Thanks for that - it's exactly the type of advice I'm after.

I was thinking more of some S-2 Vikings, E-3 Hawkeyes and SAAB JA-37N 'Cyclone' fighters - see here for a hint of where I'm comming from.

Actually, if you can find it, the old Monogram/Revell/whatever it was USS Kitty Hawk in 1/800 scaled up to 1/700 would do a CVV really well.  The dimensions are really close, especially when compared to a standard Nimitz in 1/700.

I'm building up my Deutschland using the 1/800 kit, and it scales really nicely with 1/700 aircraft on the deck.
