I've been trying to find some acrylic (transparent) rod (for displaying aircraft in flight) for about two years now (ever since the 2005 One Week Build, in fact). The LHS didn't have it, and I couldn't find any at the shows I've visited, nor at internet model shops. I finally found a plastics specialist in Germany, so this morning I got a huge package (1mx30x10 cm) containing lots of packaging material, plus (tucked away in a corner) my order (which was a bundle of rods 1 m long, but only 3x3 cm wide/high).
:dum:

The shop is Modulor. They carry all sorts of plastics including styrene sheet and rod. Pricing is reasonable, too.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a source in the US?  I'll be needing some of those for one effort down the road.

In a pinch, I've found that the rod used to open and close blinds( the type that twist) works well and can be found at the hard store. They are sold as replacements for lost or broken ones.

TAP Plastics.
TAP acrylic rod
Sizes start at 1/16", they have several retail locations on the West Coast.

United States Plastic Corp is another supplier.

Google for acrylic rod and you'll get plenty of results.

Hobbes, Plastruct do rod, strip & all sorts of construction stuff for modellers & are based in the US but you can get their range here in Europe (my LHS has a supply of some styrene items).  They do clear acrylic rod in 450mm lengths, in any diameter from 1.6mm to 28.6mm, along with round, half round, square, rectangular & spiral sections so you've got plenty of options.  If you want it, they also do it in fluorescent colours!

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Ah, cheers. My LHS (and several other model shops I've tried) does carry lots of sheet and rod styrene, plus sheets of acrylic, just not the transparent rods, hence the 'break out the big guns' approach. That order I placed with Modulor was for something like 15 meters of the stuff, so that should last me a while. The address you provided will go into my 'reference pile'.

Glad to be of help.  It's worth downloading their full catalogue as they do all sorts of stuff, I think their main business is for architectural & industrial modelling, but it's very usueful for scenery & dioramas, as well as providing that littles piece you thought you'd have to scratch build!

Craft Shop

Great on-line source for all types of craft material. Got some good quality wire from them for spars/pins etc, as well as some masking material (memo to self : try that "masking pen" out)

Well worth a look to see what else can be used. They do have fully illustrated mail order catalogue as well

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
