Interesting that these ideas are now being mooted by 'for-real' analysts. I've read several novels that explore development along these lines (and pursue it to extremes, with nations falling apart, their place being taken by nation-states based on corporations), by writers like Neal Stephenson and William Gibson. It's not a future I particularly look forward to.
