Greg,

They had 'em, not quite on that scale tho.  Called LCTs or Landing Craft, Tank.  Quite large beasties compared to your usual Landing Craft too.

Or do you mean a tank for carrying tanks?  I suppose you could build something like one of those SHEVA beasts depicted in John Ringo's Posleen books, but   .

And their big brother, the LST - Landing Ship, Tank, had some examples with a flight deck added and used as a observation airplane carrier. . .

For a moment I thought you meant this:

Presumably the tank would need a suitable catapult to launch in from the deck... :)

Well, USN tried it before... (not a tank, but similar)

Baldrick: I followed Mr Da Vinci's instructions to the letter.
Blackadder: Even though you can't actually read.
Baldrick: No, but I have done a lot of Airfix models in my time.

Maybe the Ratte?

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

in the darks when the FAA used proper aircraft carriers [and not TDC's] i think that
the end of the commission of a carrier was often marked with something like this.

i know because when i was much younger i recall seeing a photo of a piano being
catapulted off of the deck of ark royal in a book that i had borrowed from the library.

very, very funny marko!  :D  :P thanks for posting it.

I remember an advert for Citroen 20 years ago, a Visa (a kind of French trabant) was catapulted from the Foch, then disapeared into the ocean... before surfacing on top of a SSBN!!   B)
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Loooooooll! That citroen commercial was great!  Didnt top gear launch a rover from HMS Ark Royal to see if it would accelerate faster than a harrier?
