That must be fun to build - how old is the kit?  Is the mould standing up to age?

By my reckoning the SR 53 kit is over 40 yrs old, (just checked, my list says 1958, so 49 yrs old) and this one seems to be a genuine 40 year + old one !!!.

I know that a Polish company (Ursus) obtained the mould and has produced them in the recent (say last 15yrs) past; the one review I found showed a fairly clean sprue (cleaner than mine I think) - dont believe Airfix ever released it post the Type 3 bags, so about 1973 ish.    ;)

Here's my daughters checking out the real thing for me !

It is a whiff if you do it in RAuxAF markings.....

I guess its not too late yet !   I have some very nice modeldecal Vampire markings for the RAF Turnhouse RAuxAF sqn that would go very nicely............  Hmmmm. :)

QuoteThanks guys, look forward to seeing more of them ! Colin seems to have used the Scimitar as the inspiration for the markings - looking at my refs for the other Scimitar Sqns, I nearly decided to do it as an 804 aircraft with a white tail and tiger/dagger motif (from an Airfix Seahawk), just to be different - any takers?

Well the P177N was intended to complement the Sea Vixen and Buccaneer in service in the early 60's so therefore would likely have replaced those Scimitar units in the Day Fighter role. Thats what i suggested anyway ;).

From the What-if side its always handy when aksed to think about those squadrons who's markings have either not appeared in decal form or have not been reussed since the 50's & 60's. Such as an updated 804 Sqdn or even 802 (who were supposed to be the third SHAR squadron instead of 899!).

My P177N has been cleaned up ready for assembly, but currently working on a couple of other projects before i can get back to it.

Cheers

I remember to build this Airfix kit when a was 12 or so ... 35 years ago  :o
I really would like to get it again.

I have a MPC issue of the SR.53, it comes with all these gawdy decals (yellow shooting stars IIRC) and the instructions say paint it bright red.  The kit does have the prototype decals too thank goodness.

Did the aircraft appear in some sci-fi comic or movie or something to warrant making a kit of it that way?

im not sure, but u should see the scheme that comes with the MPC issue of the Airfix Beagle Basset.....who ever came up with that paint job must have been on LSD at the time.
I always hope for the best.

Great stuff Gengriz, I wish I could get hold of a kit so I could turn it into the early version of the P.177 based on the SR.53:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Well, they were done in the late-sixties, or thereabouts, as I remember.  Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised?
