To carry Sparrows and AMRAAMs in the same air superiority mission.

Thanks in advance.

F-15Cs (or was it F-18A?) can do this, no?

Scooterman

Yes and has been done.  Before the Slammer became widespread, fighter Eagles would carry aIM-7 on the intakes and AIM-120 under the wing.  Pics recently have shown an all AIM-120 and AIM-9X loadout however.

I guess the theory behind it was Sparrow has longer range than Slammer then.  Newer models of AIM-120 have better motors to make up that difference now.

As always, the experts here rule-this was just an (un)educated guess.

Whats a slammer?

The AMRAAM has allways had longer range than Sparrow...

That's the AMRAAM's nickname.

If your fire control radar can provide CW illumination for the Sparrow and your systems interface with the AMRAAM you can do it.  As to why you would do it, perhaps if you didn't have enough AMRAAMs to go round?  The AMRAAM is more agile than the Sparrow (and perhaps even some earlier AIM-9), so if you were really keen on BVR 'solutions' you might choose to load Sparrow/AMRAAMs in preference to Sparrow/early AIM9 but this is, at best, tenuous.

The AIM-7 has about a 10nm increase in range over the 120, but the 'Raam make up for that by having min. launch distance that well inside AIM-9 parameters. You 'can' sling both the Sparrow & the 120, although why would you want to is a entirely different question.

Not different. This WAS my question, indeed. :)

I am deciding the stores for my Boeing Enhanced Phantom.

Thanks.

There is a photo of an F-15C with such a mixed load in the calendar in my bedroom.  The aircraft is carrying Sparrows under the fuselage, and a mixed load of AIM-9L/M and AIM-120 on the wing pylons.  Since the wing pylons on the Phantom are somewhat similar, I don't see any reason why it couldn't carry the same load, provided the radar was upgraded to cover the AIM-120.

^^^^ I was thinking exactly in this distribution.
Thanks to all of you for your info.

I'd go for both, and I usually do when I build an a/c. I always thought that the more types you have the merrier. Just like going fishing, you don't bring one lure and hope for success, you bring a selection and always find one that works !

Besides, everyone knows that adding a many and varied weapons loadout adds to the coolness factor by 100%*.

Last year, during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, there was a picture of a Baz with 2 Python III, 2 Python IV, 2 Sparrows, 2 Amraams and I think 3 gasbags. Looked good ^_^

No, sorry :( Can't bloody figure out why I didn't right-click-save-as :dum:

I did find this in my search. Blue rounds, but Sidewinders, Amraams and Sparrows.

I'll keep looking for the Baz with the 2-2-2-2 load.

Martin, are you sure the Sparrows were not HARMS which are a similar shape but a bit bigger?  At a glance they can be confused.  Sparrows would need an CW illuminator mod to the radar which I thought had only be fitted to the F16ADFs.
