With a bunch of projects in their final stages (ModelZona is in June), I needed to continue with my current fascination with turning military machines into civilian, hence the massive research carrier used by the Danish Maritime Lab, in conjunction with TONMO,the Auckland Research Instiute, and MOTE Aquarium to study the ocean in a "floating city".

The kit is Heller's aged Foch in 1/400, and boy, does it eat up the putty! First things first...make sure you have a secure base to mount to!

Adding on the torp bulges, and the sonar bulges: (the hull was removed for psr)

LOL...the aircrap, errr, I mean aircraft look to be crusader's, some helo's and such...do you want them?  Sinkhole city, though...be warned.

Managed to work all day, and still have enough time to get some sanding and priming done...

cthulhu77

Hmmm...mine has crusaders and chopters. Yucchorama.

  Started working on the hangar:

Ten coats of paint later, the main hull is done and mounted...time to start on the fun stuff!

mmm....looking good.

Would like to see a Cousteau-esque catamaran c/w launch mechanism.

Any way that you could fanagle it to include a brightly coloured PBY Catalina, too?

Just dreaming...

Oh, and here is a possible source for further inspiration for your research vessel:

read my mind...I am looking to scratchbuild a catalina, probably from a 350th Mitchell or something...

cthulhu77

? Do you have a pic?  If I have to scratch, it might as well be Dane!

Here is the deck so far, with the chopter's folded rotors (cardstock) and the rebuilt turboprop:

There are a few Catalinas - Iron Shipwrights has one (actually two in one box) in resin, and there are a couple of diecast 1/400 in the $20+ range.

I'd go with the resin ones...

Thanks for that link...though I don't know if I want to spend that much on a two inch long plane.  If Shanlyn found out, I'd be dead meat.

Finally figured out a way to attach the waaaay offsize hangar bay, if you glue it to the bottom of the upper deck first...

cthulhu77

Then I could place the top, match it up, and sand down the bay to fit the hull!

Can we please get a close-up of that from the side (or do we get teased until she's all done?)?
