To me, it looks more dangerous in those markings. Great work! B)

Just lovely work you've done there Matrix.....but

You're just gonna have to spill the beans and tell us which yellow you used for the undersurfaces!!! Fess up!

I'm speechless with amazement at the aplomb with which you've applied that flawless coat of yellow. It's just witchcraft, I tell ya!!

Bad to the Bone!  I have got to learn to weather like that, which means I must learn patience. But since that isn't likely I'll just enjoy this one!

Wow an absolutely superlative job of painting and weathering, expecially that amazing yellow! I agree with Allan, it's gotta be witchcraft!

I am in awe, Matrixone!

Thanks guys!

No magic with that yellow paint, I used flat white as a base coat and then sprayed on the yellow. The paint used was Model Master enamels and the yellow was a bottle of Deep Yellow, a Japanese color I think but I like to use it in place of Model Master RLM 04.
This model has been a blast to paint and weather and I want to try and do a Japanese Zero or Ki 100 and do some extreme weathering on it, this P-40 has been very good practice for weathering single color uppersurface camouflage.

Many thanks for the info, Matrix, re the yellow--does it dry matt or gloss? And whose matt white do you favor?
yellow is such a hard color to apply
one thing I like about the German planes you see on Hyperscale and other sites is the yellow color of the noses and rudders-some modellers add a drop of red to the yellow to really capture the correct shade
And Matrix-what do you think of the Modelmaster enamel RLM 76?

Allan,
The Model Master color ''Deep Yellow'' dries flat and I painted the bottom of my P-40 with only one coat after a base coat of flat white. The ''Deep Yellow'' color is a fair match for RLM 04 and is WAY closer than Model Masters version of that color!
There were two yellows the Germans used for markings, RLM 04 and RLM 27, the color RLM 04 was a bright color and that is the color I chose for my P-40s underserface, RLM 27 was a darker version of yellow and looks toned down a bit.
Most but not all Luftwaffe a/c that had yellow markings appears to have been painted in 04, but aircraft that were flown in the MTO used RLM 27 (under the cowlings) quite often. Late in the war the Germans were forced to use up older stocks of paint so airplanes in the same squadron might have been seen in RLM 04 and others in RLM 27 marking colors.
The Model Master RLM 76 is very good and looks like a decent match for the early/mid-war version of 76. Late in the war the color RLM 76 was changed and was more of a white-blue and was very pale looking, factory fresh Ju 88G nightfighters captured just after the war ended are a good example of this pale version of 76.
Model Master RLM colors that I feel are good are 02, 65, 74, 75, 76, 79, and 80. The worst are RLM 70 and RLM 71, they are not even close to the intended shades, and RLM 66 is way too light but is super easy to fix by adding some black to darken it.
