Phew! Another simester of school gone, now I can get back to modeling. :ar:

Here's an idea for a GB suited for kitbashers young and old...  dedicated to builds entirely out of spare parts, which Im sure some of us(raises hand) have in excess. I'm pretty sure someone brought this up before but I propose it again :)

Who's up for it? I'm thinking June 25 - Jan 31 or similar.

Rules be simple:

1. Must be a whiff(duh).

2. Model must be made entirely out of spare parts and scratchbuilt components, with spares making up at least 50% of the construction.

3. ...spare parts meaning: anything from chunks of unrecognisable plastic to complete unbuilt kits that you bought just to use the decals.
a ) In-progress builds count as long as they are significantly altered enough while participating so that they won't be completed as originally intended As in, if youve got a half finished F-14 around that you meant to finish as a more-or-less accurate F-14, it's okay to slap fixed wings and spats onto it, but not okay to finish it as a structurally-accurate F-14.
b ) If using a kit that had its decals ransacked, its okay to finish it out of the box as long as the markings are whiff and you don't use national insignia included in the kit(which you shouldn't be able to anyway, right?)
c ) If you butchered up different kits of the same subject to make one complete model to your satisfaction, it is okay to use just the leftovers of the donor kits.

4. Going out and buying aftermarket parts and decals is okay, but buying kits to cannibalize parts and decals isn't. The whiff-ninjas won't take you in the middle of the night, but you'd defeat the purpose of the build by ending up with more spare parts than you started.

5. Build and start as many as you want/ can. Even if you don't finish, you'd still make progress towards making your spare parts bin smaller!

6. Feel free to share parts. If you give to someone who doesn't want anything specific, be nice and give them stuff they can actually use.

7. Go ahead and chop complete or near-complete models that no longer interest you, since thats what they do in real junkyards anyway. Just know that you'll probably end up with even more leftovers than before. ^_^

8. Have fun, or else

Unless you want me to check(and feel free to ask :) ), I'll leave it up to y'all to determine the eligibility of an in-progress build is and how much of an existing build counts as a spare. The idea isn't to finish models(that's what the Phoenix Build is for :P ) but to use up all those spare wings, engines, and landing gear components a lot of us have laying around but will probably never use otherwise. Part of the fun should also be figuring out new ways to overcome components being missing or mis-matched. I'd like to use an honor-system, since the admins can't splurge for a dedicated Whiffer Secret Police.

But what if....

I don't have a canopy to spare?
-Open cockpit!

I dont have landing gear?
-Build it in flight.

I don't have any superstructure for my ship hull?
-Flat decked barge? Or perhaps mash it with an airplane to make a flying boat(see above question)

I have a canopy but no cockpit stuff?
-Paint the inside of the canopy blue!

I don't have ANY cockpit nor canopy stuff?
-UAV or remote control drone!

Ive got wings but no fuselage?!
-Flying wing!

I've got a fuselage but no wings??
-Ekronoplan!

I've got no engine?
-Glider, or unpowered mistel-bomb.

I've got car parts, plane parts, but not enough to do either?
-Make a Roadable Airplane or a Flying car!

Ive got a modern jet fighter with no modern goodies like missiles?
-Luft 46!

Ive got landing gear and stuff but nothing to make an airframe and I cant scratchbuild me one?
-Um... make a shopping cart?

All the parts I have would make for an anachronistic piston-powered jet fighter with spats?
-Perfect!

I like your idea and I would definitely be in.

But to add a small difficulty I would add another rule:

All the main components of a frame CANNOT come from the same subject.

Example:

Aircraft's main components: fuselage, wings, tail. At least one of these components has to be "from a second aircraft"

Tank's main components: hull, wheels, turret, gun ...

And so on ...

Will die without understanding this world.

I really like this idea goober! I think we should compress the timeframe however. Maybe run it from July 1 - Sept 1? Group builds that run longer than a couple of months have a tendency to languish a bit and might force Mr. Howling Mouse to run a "Phoenix Part II" GB next year. ;)

Count me in!

Hi BdaB,

For modellers like me 2 months is too short. Please.

Perhaps someone with a larger spare parts box could donate parts to someone who hasnt?

I'm fine with whatever the majority or the GB moderator decide, Carlos. It was only a suggestion.

I thought about adding a rule like that, as it would be in true-blue whatiffer spirit, but I think that this GB should also be open to those folks who're JMN about certain subjects and butcher up several different kits of the same subject just to make one perfect model.

 However, I'm fairly certain that nobody here would actually submit a semi-accurate Bf 109G from parts that were rejected soley because they dont have the right number of rivets. Models using components from all the same subject would be kinda uncool but if it helps use up junk plastic, go for it.

Okay, so how about for a timeline, we go from late june/early july up to October 31st... Those who celebrate Halloween would also get a chance to add Frankenstein models to their activities :ar:

Prize would be.... not a model kit. The last thing parts-hoarders need is more plastic after cleaning house  . I'll go look for some aviation-related reference books with pretty pictures to donate instead.

:) Added a blurbs about parts-sharing and hacking up complete models.

^_^ Okay, we've got two for sure, one probably, and one pending the aquisition of spare parts.... who else?

Count me in if this goes ahead - I've got a lot of spare parts lying around from my current projects, let alone the spares box!

Interesting!  :P  Only one question, Sir! Could the builds for the GB already been started but not completed or do we have to wait for the official start date to begin?

How finished is it? Got a picture of the subject in question?
