The MiG-AT trainer has been under development by MiG since the early 1990s but, as the Russian air force chose the Yak-130 in 2002, its future is not promising.

In addition to the basic trainer version, the MiG-AT family was designed to include a combat trainer, a light single-seat tactical fighter, a naval combat trainer and a combat air patrol aircraft and the inspiration for this model was this drawing of the single seat MiG-AS light tactical fighter project, which is now unlikely to be built.

This is another half finished project that re-emerged during the recent house move (would have been an ideal candidate for the Phoenix Build if I'd been a Forum member at that time).

The model is essentially the A Model 1/72 MiG-AT up to a point just behind the canopy where the cockpit and nose of an old Matchbox Hawk 200 have been grafted on.

The A Model kit is, to put it politely, challenging to build. While it's quite well thought out, the moulding technology is just not up to the ambition of the kit designers - most small parts are thick, mould lines are prominent and there are some parts that were supposed to go inside the intake trunking that I just left out (I still have no idea how they were meant to fit).

The model was originally intended to be ready for the Nationals/Scale Modelworld two years ago but I had a problem with the light grey colour scheme I'd chosen (uninspiring and was going to show up all the flaws) and, when the initial painting showed a large amount of filling and sanding still to do, I put it to one side.

However, a sudden thought that it would look good in a three tone blue scheme has rekindled my enthusiasm. Unfortunately, in the period prior to its re-emergence it has lost one main U/C leg, half the nose U/C leg, and various probes and aerials. I've rebuilt the missing main U/C leg with plastic rod and I've also begun to sand down the remaining flaws. With luck, I'll even get the new main paint scheme on over the weekend - - -

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Seeing that I own an Amodel MiG-AT and have attempted to start it, I would like to say...

You know, it would look great in some third world nation's makings and camouflage.  Ethiopia or Uganda perhaps?  Peru?  North Korea?  But not Cuba, too bright, makes it look like a parakeet. B)

Looks like it "should've been" McGreig! That to me is the pinnacle of whiffery.

I can't wait to see the paint scheme!

It was reported a while back that Algeria had ordered some MiG-ATs.  Not sure if it ever went ahead though.
