Had a Mil Hip helicopter pass over town this morning (I can't tell an Mi-8 from an Mi-17 on the ground let alone flying).

It was either civil or the Czech air force's VIP Hip as it was quite high vis in finish. Usually when a Hip goes over its a low vis camoflaged one.

In principle, you can tell by which side the tail rotor's on (and no, I can't remember which is which either ). However, IIRC, some Mi-8s were refurbished and got Mi-17 tailbooms and rotors in the process, so even that's not 100%

I beleive some Mi-17s have a hard nose. (no glazing in the nose). Some Mi-17 come with a downwards folding ramp, while the Mi-8 has clamshells.

Both the Mi-8 and Mi-17 have the clamshell rear doors and the Hip I saw had them. Its the upgraded Mi-171 that has the ramp.

I saw the same Hip again yesterday and I'm still not sure if it's an 8 or 17.

We hardly ever get any interesting traffic over our house, military or otherwise, so it was a treat to hear the sound of lots of Shaft Horsepower today to find this when I went outside:

Not a great pic because they are pretty high, but two Herks and two Osprey is an unusual sight 'round these parts.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Fast as the Osprey is, I think the C-130 has at least a good 60-70kt advantage if it comes down to who is buying the beer.  Maybe less if it's not a J.

edit-I zoomed in on the original and the -130s are Js based on the number of prop blades (KC-130Js from the look of the pods outboard of the engines), so they could definately beat the Ospreys to the bar.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Yet another Hip over town today! What do they want from me?!

This time it was definitely a Mi-171 in camo.

Monday was a public holiday here, also the day of the local Lifeboat Open Day. We went out for a pub lunch with the kidz, when we got back we found seven of the RED ARROWS parked over our house 'holding' whilst the synchro pair did their act over Hoylake !

Today in work we were buzzed by a (very) low flying RAF Puma, couple of passes, doors back, waving at the 'grockles' on the prom..... must have been running 'lean mixture' or had an engine upgrade as the usual tell-tale plume of sooty smoke was noticeable by its' absence !
